Medication Teaching Plan Trade Name: Senokot Generic Name: Senna

Overview: The purpose of this teaching plan is to provide the client with information about how to safely take a newly ordered drug senokot. Nursing Diagnosis: Knowledge deficit regarding senokot r/t lack of previous experience with medication a.e.b. questions regarding taking the drug. Identify the dose ordered by the physician. Identify when to take the ordered medicine. Discuss the therapeutic purpose for taking this drug. Describe the adverse effects of this drug. Demonstrate how to take a radial pulse prior to taking medicine. List any drugs and herbal remedies that should be avoided when taking this drug.

Implementation: 1. Generic name-Senokot Trade name-Senna 2. Ordered dose for this patient is 0.25mg 3. Take medication each morning after taking pulse, if pulse under 60 hold and contact MD. 4. The therapeutic use of Senokot is: To relieve constipation after surgery. 5. Adverse effects include: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); black, tarry stools; severe stomach pain. 6. Teach patient how to take radial pulse for 1 full minute prior to taking medication. Hold medicine if pulse less than 60. 7. Medications/Herbs to avoid while taking this drug include: Do not take senna without the advice of a healthcare provider if you are using any of the following medications:

Digoxin (Lanoxin); A diuretic (water pill); or A blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin).
