The sum total of ways in which an individual reacts to & interacts with others. Gordon Allport described two major ways of studying personality; nomothetic and theidiographic. Nomothetic psychologyseeks general laws that can be applied to many different people. Idiographic psychologyis an attempt to understand the unique aspects of a particular individual.

1.The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

The MBTI is the most widely used assessment instrument in the world.

Its a personality test wherein people are asked how they feel or act in a particular situation. 4/24/12

Introverted Extraverted Individuals are outgoing, sociable & assertive. They are quite & shy.

Sensing Intuitive More practical & prefer routine & order. Thinkingunconscious processes & look at the big picture. Rely on Feeling Uses reasons & logic to handle problems. Judging their personal values & emotions. Rely on 4/24/12

Conclusion

MBTI is widely used in practice by major organizations like apple computers, AT&T, Citi Group & so on. Most evidences suggest that it is not a valid measure of personality. It forces person into either one type or the other, there is no inbetween. It can be a tool for increasing self -awareness & providing career guidance but not as a selection test for job candidates.

2. The Five Big Personality Model

The five factormodel of personality focuses upon those behaviors that you express while dealing with people, changing circumstances and your environment. The two remaining behavioral dimensions relate to work & depression situations. 4/24/12

Agreeable: friendly / compassionate vs. competitive / outspoken.
