For Immediate Release Contacts: Lissette Coln Chief of Staff to the Superintendent Bridgeport Public Schools announces Safe Corridor Program The school district, city, parents and broader community come together to ensure students have a safe route to and from school Bridgeport, CT April 23, 2012 Students deserve a safe route to and from school. Thanks to the collaborative effort of the Bridgeport School District and Bridgeport Police Department, along with parent and community leaders, they will soon have one.

The Bridgeport Public School System is pleased to announce that it has finalized plans to implement a Safe Corridor Program for all students in the district. The Safe Corridor Program is a community safety effort that will provide every student with a safe route to and from school by utilizing a network of adults who monitor the school and surrounding community.

For each school, the most traveled route that is also accessible to children will be designated as the Safe Corridor. These corridors will be indicated by posted signs, and will also include identified safe haven areas for students along the way. While students walk to and from class, this route will be monitored by cameras and supported by volunteers who will observe and assist students as needed. Bridgeport Police will also patrol the corridor to provide support. The corridor will be in operation for one half hour before the 1st class of the day and 30 minutes after dismissal, with all volunteers trained by BOE Police, Security and Bridgeport Police. Finally, to ensure that all of these efforts

are coordinated and effective, a volunteer will manage efforts from abase station that will be established at each school.

It is our goal that this collaborative effort will result in the safety and security of all Bridgeport students on their way to and from school. For more information on the Safe Corridor Program, please contact Lissette Coln Chief of Staff to the Superintendent for Bridgeport Public Schools.
