II. Short Answer (15 points each; 90 points total) Answer each of the following questions thoroughly, using examples from the presentations and discussions in class. Each answer should be 2-3 paragraphs. 1. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X were two of the important leaders of the Civil Rights Movement. Compare and contrast the background, beliefs, strategies, events, and organizations associated with each of them. 2. John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. Explain the events surrounding his assassination. What happened that day? Who was arrested? What different theories and conclusions are there about the assassination? 3. Which city was frequently referred to as the most racist city in the country? What happened in the city to give it that title? Give specific examples of people and events to support your explanation. 4. What was the Cuban Missile Crisis? When did it happen? What decisions did President Kennedy make to deal with the situation? Were the actions taken by the United States successful or not? 5. Select two organizations or groups that were part of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. For each of the organizations, identify what type of group it was, who was involved in the group, what their goals/strategies were, and any major events that they were involved in. In your opinion, did they have an important impact on increasing Civil Rights for all Americans? 6. Select two events discussed in the different presentations that you think are the two most important events of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. What are those two events and what happened during each of them? Where did it happen? Who was involved in the event? Why were those events so crucial to the Civil Rights Movement? Why did you choose those events?
