POWER SYSTEM ANALYSIS SEMESTER 7

Assignment 3

___________________________________________________________________
1) A 50 MVA, 11 kV, three phase alternator was subjected to different types of faults. The fault currents were: three phase fault 1870 A, line to line fault 2590 A, single line to ground fault 4130 A. The alternator neutral is solidly grounded. Find the per unit values of the three sequence reactances of the alternator. 2) A generator with constant excitation supplies 30 MW through a step-up transformer and a high voltage line to an infinite bus bar. If the steady state stability limit of the system is 60 MW, estimate the maximum permissible sudden increase of generator output if the stability is to be maintained. The resistance of the generator, transformer and line may be neglected.

3) i) Determine the primary ALFC loop parameters for a control area having the following data. Total rated area capacity = 2000 MW Normal operating load = 1000 MW Inertia constant = 5.0 s Regulation = 2.4 Hz/ pu MW

Assume that the load frequency dependency is linear. ii) Find the static frequency drop for the 2 GW system in i), following a 1% load increase. iii) What will be the frequency drop if the governor loop were nonexistent or open?
