General Overview and Design Guidelines/Approach The following document is a design solution for Remote PC operated Lanterns. Throughout this document it is assumed that the lantern type is of LED array with a standard 6V battery, a Solar panel, a charging circuitry. Design Requirement: Lantern needs to be switched off/on from a remote PC. Lanterns will be distributed among different people on rental basis. A list of all distributed lantern needs to be stored on a PC and from the PC, the lantern needs to controlled based upon the payment of rent from the user. Solution: Each lantern is to be provided with a GSM modem and Microcontroller Unit along with the charging circuitry. A SIM slot will be available in the GSM modem and a Mobile number will be assigned to each lantern. The list of all those lanterns with their Mobile Numbers will be stored on to a PC. Based upon payment of rent the PC sends an SMS to the concerned lantern and it is switched on for a defined amount of time (e.g.: 30 days Validity).

GSM MODEM:

HARDWARE ARCHITECTURE

SIM card slot A GSM MODEM ( Here it is BenQ M23) We can use SIM900 or cheaper one on bulk manufacture

Microcontroller Unit:

Appropriate coding is to be fused into the controller. The Microcontroller and GSM modem is to be selected with respect to the cost. A software to send SMS to mobile and Data base management system software are to be developed in a PC attached with a Mobile GSM modem. From this software the remote lantern can automatically controlled.
