HealthCanadahasincludedquestionsaboutcigarillouseinitsannualsmokingsurveyCTUMS
(CanadianTobaccoUseMonitoringSurvey)since2007.Inthe2009and2010cyclesofthesurvey,
theyalsoaskedquestionsabouttheuseofflavouredcigarillos.
Cigarillouseisnottraditionallyincludedwhenmeasuringsmokingprevalence.Asaresult,smoking
ratesinCanadaarecurrentlyunderestimatedbythenumberofCanadianswhosmokecigarillosbut
donotsmokecigarettes.

Ifcigarillosmokingwereincludedinsmokingprevalencerates,thentherateofsmokingbymen
wouldincreasefrom20%to22%(anincreaseof315,000smokers).

Amongboysaged1519,thesmokingprevalenceratewouldincreasefrom12%to16%,
representing48,000additionalyoungsmokers.

Amonggirlsaged1519,thesmokingratewouldincreasefrom11%to13%,representing20,000
additionalyoungsmokers.

cigarillousehasfallen.
Cigarillousedeclinedin2010,theyearinwhichtherewerelegislativechanges1totheuseof
flavourings,packagingandadvertisingintobaccoproducts(includinglittlecigars).Despitethislaw,
thosewhousedlittlecigarsweremorelikelytociteusingflavouredcigarsthantoreportusing
unflavouredones.
InthefirstcycleofCTUMS,administeredwhenthebanonflavourshadnotyetbeenfully
implemented,717,000Canadiansreportedusingaflavouredlittlecigarorcigarillointhepastmonth.
InthesecondcycleofCTUMS,administeredaftertheimplementationoftheflavourban,551,000
Canadiansreportedusingaflavouredlittlecigarorcigarillointhepastmonth.
