Influence of Binahong (Anredera Cordifolia) (Ten.) V.

Steenis Extract on Renal Function Improvement

Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) V. Steenes), commonly known as binahong in Indonesia and madeira vine in other country. Binahong leaves have been used in Indonesian traditional medicine to treat various diseases including renal failure improvement, diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, infections and another diseases. Renal impairment cannot be healed by medicines, therefore, this study aims to determine the effect of binahong leaves extract against renal function improvement in rats with renal failure conditions followed by determination of an optimum dose in ameliorating renal failure due to the inducer. Before binahong extract was administered, piroxicam orally and gentamycin intravenously were administered for one week. Rats model of renal failure were obtained on day-8 after administration of gentamicin (100 mg/kg bw) intraperitoneally and piroxicam (3.6 mg/kg bw) orally. Binahong extract (50, 100, and 150 mg/kg bw) was given on day-8 for four weeks simultaneously with oral piroxicam as renal failure inducer. Evaluation of renal function included serum creatinine levels, serum urea levels, organ index, and kidneys histology. Results showed that at 4th week of therapy, binahong extract with doses of 50, 100, and 150 mg/kg bw decreased creatinine levels (0.02 0.17, 0.07 0.13, and 0.05 0.12) mg/dL which were significantly different to the positive control group and decreased urea level of 20.35 2.89 mg/dL significantly different at a dose of 150 mg/kg bw. Binahong extract at a dose of 150 mg/kg bw showed significantly influenced on renal index, which were similar with normal group, 0.72 0.03 vs 0.70 0.08, but significantly different to the positive control group (p, 0,05). Histological results of the three doses of binahong extract also showed renal cells improvement. Based on the serum creatinine and urea levels, it can be concluded that the dose of 50 mg/kg bw was able to provide kidney repair. Renal improvement were increased by increasing doses. Based on the data of kidney index and histology, the dose of 150 mg/kg bw could provide the best effect.
