Brain, Mind, and Behavior

What do you think the relationship is between the brain, the mind, and behavior? One of the biggest discoveries of the 20th century was the discovery that behavior has a material basis in the nervous system. The brain: is a physical organ that makes the existence of the mind possible -the place where the mind resides -the seat/creator of thoughts that eventually become part of the mind -the brain reflects what is going on in the mind The mind: a manifestation of our perceptual abilities, thought, emotion, will, memory, and imagination. -awareness of consciousness, analytical ability , problem solving -experience of consciousness -consciousness mind-brain relationship theories: -"epiphenomenalism"-the idea that consciousness is simply an effect of neural events in the brain

-Berkeley: mental events are all that exist, they are the only events that we experience directly -Identity Theory: there is no problem at all reconciling neural and mental events, they are essentially the same thing -thinking about mental events=thinking about neural events
