Study Guide for HST 219

Ancient History

Identify and state the significance of six (6) of the following terms. For each answer, you
should write two short paragraphs (i.e., 3 to 4 sentences). The first paragraph should seek
to identify the term and place it in its proper historical context, while the second should
provide a clear indication of why the term is historically important and/or worthy of
historical study.

In other words, the first paragraph should answer the questions ‘who?’, ‘what?’,
‘where?’, and ‘when?’, and the second paragraph should address the questions ‘why?’
and ‘so what?’ While identifying the terms accurately is important, greater weight will be
placed on your understanding of the historical significance of the terms. So, for example,
if a question is worth a total of 10 points, 6 of these will be awarded on the basis of your
understanding of the term’s historical significance.

On the day of the test you will choose six of eight possible terms from the following list:
