SECOND World War planes and modern-day fighter jets from RAF Coningsby joined forces for a flypast over Buckingham Palace on Friday - as part of the Royal wedding celebrations.
Three historic aircraft from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight flew in formation 30 seconds in front of four fast jets. The Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster swept over the famous landmark, followed by the roaring sounds of two Typhoons and two Tornados G4s splitting through the air. This display at 1.30pm was watched by the Royal wedding party from the balcony of Buckingham Palace. The route also saw the aircraft fly over Admiralty Arch and along the Mall where crowds of supporters were gathered. Preparation for the flypast began the second the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton was announced in November. A lot of planning went into it to make sure everything went smoothly on the day. This included liaising with the likes of the Civil Aviation Authority to ensure the air space was clear for the flypast - especially considering the close proximity of busy airports such as Heathrow. The worlds media were at the base last Wednesday to witness Coningsbys Tornados and Typhoons (provided by RAF Leuchars in Scotland) rehearse ahead of the big event. There was also an opportunity to speak to some of the pilots preparing to fly the aircraft.
