7 DuringanApril11LoudounCountySchoolBoardworksession,SuperintendentDr.Edgar HatrickmadesmallchangestohisproposedbudgetreductionsbroughtforthApril10.The boardnowfacesa$11.7millioncuttotheirproposedbudget,markeddownfromtheir previous$22millioncut. TheminimumfundsthatwillbeallocatedtoLoudounCountySchoolsfromthestate decreasedfromjustmorethan$8millionto$7.91million,Hatricksaid.Statelegislatorswill finalizetheamountofprojectedrevenueinmidApril.Theimplementationofemployees paymenttotheVirginiaRetirementSystem(VRS)wascutdownto1percent,costing$1 millionforfiscal2013,cuttingtheoriginalfigureinhalf. Hatricktooktheinsurancepaymentincreaseoffthetableafterhearingconcernsfromsome boardmembers. DebbieRose(Algonkian)saidApril10shefelttheincreaseininsuranceratesseemedunfair toteacherswhowillnotbereceivingasubstantialpayincreaseforexamplethosewhohave showedloyaltytothecountyandremainedteachingformanyyears. Welistenedtoyourcommentslastnight.Ijustbelievewecandothisabetterwayandtake sometimetofigureoutwhatwewanttodowithemployeehealthinsuranceovertime, Hatricksaid. Therewasalsoashiftininstructionaltechnologyequipmenttotalling$1.94millionfromthe operatingbudgettogotowardleasingandpurchasingofbuses. ChairmanEricHornberger(Ashburn)askedstaffiftheyveconsideredlookingatnaturalgas oranygasalternativesforbuseswithrisinggasprices.JeffPlatenberg,assistant superintendentfortheDepartmentofSupportServices,saidstaffhasbeenlookingintoit,but currentlythereisntinfrastructuresetforstationsinalternativegasproducts. Atotaloftwoprogramsaresettobecutfromschoolsthatwillnotaffectcurrentstaff.One program,theelementarymathematicsfacilitators,wouldcut13positionsfivewhchare vacantandtheothereightwillbereassigned,saving$975,000.Theotherprogram,anSAT prepprogram,wouldcutsixandahalffulltimeemployeesfromthatclass,whichwillbe reassignedtootherclassroomstosave$487,000. Theschoolsystemisgoingtofeelthecrunchthisisstillatighteningofthebeltsandits stillareduction.Wearestillgoingtofeelthereductionsacross[theboard],BrendaSheridan (Sterling)saidconcerningthenewstaffingreductions.Wehaveaprojectedincreaseof 2,500studentswithadecreaseofservices. Thetwoprogramsaffectedwouldbeincorporatedintogeneralstudiesinclassrooms.With theSATclass,itwouldlendahandtoafterschoolfeebasedactivitiesforstudents. AccordingtoSharonAckerman,assistantsuperintendentofLCPS,theSATclasshadlow enrollment,makingitatargetforthechoppingblock.Shealsopointedouttheclasswasnt anattractivecreditclass. Itsnotaweightedclass,therearestillotheropportunitiesthroughtheSOLremediation funding.Wearehelpingstudentsinotherways,Ackermansaid.Iwouldsaytrytokeepand andtrytogetenrollmentup,butwehaventhadthoseclassesfilled.
