ES Library: Year in Review

Overview
We have had a wonderfully busy time in the library this school year. It began with a bit of disappointment at not being in our new space over at the Techno campus, but we quickly got to work, re-thinking our current space and made a few simple changes that have worked out well. Students have been excited to come to the library especially on those days when we were able to share long awaited new books with them. We are a community of readers and what a privilege I have to share in this experience with so many wonderful young people.

Look What Weve Been Up To

The library supported thirty-six PYP units of inquiry in grades K-5 either through direct collaboration with the classroom teacher or by providing resources for student work. The students in 1st-2nd grade participated in direct instruction using the Super 3 Research model and students in grades 3-5 worked with the Big6 Research Model. Pre-K and Kindergarten were also introduced to the Super 3 model.

Tanya Batt
Story Teller Extraordinaire!
New Zealand native, Tanya Batt came and shared a day of story telling. She was so engaging and provided the children an opportunity to participate in the tradition of oral story telling. Her visits to all 3 divisions have been a highlight that continues to be talked about around campus.

PYP Units of Inquiry

PreK: Light, Shadows, and Reflection
PreK students explored light and how it can change with movement and reflection. In the library we explored the award winning book, Shadow, by Blaise Cendrars, Shadows and Reflections by Tana Hoban, and Let it Shine: three Favorite Spirituals by Ashley Bryan. We then made our own poster picture with colorful shapes and black shadows all around. Kindergarten: How We Express Ourselves: Patterns These young students love the Little Miss and Mr. Men books and so to support the Patterns unit, they each made a page of Little Miss and Mr. Men characters into a pattern and then put it all together in a book. We were learning about where we can find information and using texts as support for this understanding.

1st Grade: Where We Are in Place and Time: Change The first graders were very interested to explore how technology has changed over the years. We used World Book Online to view images of old technology and talk about how it has changed. They sorted pictures and created a poster showing progression of change in things like telephones, televisions, and computers. Students were also reintroduced to the Super 3 research process model as we created costumes for a paper doll representing the traditional dress of each childs home country.

Where We are In Place and Time: Homes We also learned about using online resources by searching for interesting house pictures using World Book Online. We turned our ideas into a book called Our Favorite Homes. 4

2nd Grade: Where We Are in Time and PlaceExtinction Is Forever

The students in second grade love the extinction unit and to reinforce the Super 3 research model, we did a mini research project on the extinct flying creature: the Meganeura, or the Giant Dragonfly. To show what we learned we created a life-size Meganeura and hung it from the library ceiling. Pretty cool!

4th Grade: Where We Are In Place and Time: Ancient Civilizations

During this unit 4th graders learn about inventions that come from long ago that have impacted life today. In the library, we worked with nonfiction texts and chose a game or activity that was new to us, invented by someone else, and that we wanted to share with the class. Using the Big 6 Research Model, partners presented some amazing magic tricks, games, and art forms that they learned by reading these texts.

How We Organize Ourselves: In Their Shoes Using Cinderella stories from around the world, the students paired up to create a video book talk of the story. These are stored on the library catalog homepage. Take a look!

5h Grade:
The 5th graders conducted research on the Universe using the Big 6 Research Model. This was preparatory for the major research project undertaken during Exhibition. This culminating work demonstrates how well the 5th graders can inquire, and answer information problems. While guided by mentors, these students show an amazing amount of interdependent skill to complete and share some remarkable work on the night of Exhibition.

3rd Grade: Where We Are In Place and Time

Students explored the lives of people who have impacted the world. They read biographies of different people and used the Big 6 Research Model to re-write a story on the life of Gladys Aylward; missionary t o China. They published a hardcopy of their story on Tikitok.com. The book was added to the library collection

4th Grade: Collaboration Unit

Who We Are: Health and Well-Being
This year, Ms. Anderson and Ms. Stevenson collaborated more fully on the Health and Well-Being unit. Together they planned and taught several lessons; 2 co-taught in the library with Ms. Anderson focusing on information literacy skills while Ms. Stevenson focused on content. In the library, students learned how to evaluate websites for authority and designed food guides that would include all the necessary food groups to maintain a healthy and nutritious diet. It was a good experience to work alongside the classroom teacher and both take responsibility for educating the students in this important area. Thank you, Ms. Stevenson for your enthusiasm and willingness to collaborate at a deeper level.
