James Stewart

James Maitland "Jimmy" Stewart

(May 20, 1908 July 2, 1997) was an American film and stage actor. He was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning one in competition and receiving one Lifetime Achievement award. He also had a noted military career during World War II and Vietnam War, who rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the United States Air Force Reserve.

The Philadelphia Story Based on the Broadway play of the same name, the film is about a socialite whose wedding plan is complicated by the arrival of her exhusband and a magazine journalist (Stewart).

The Philadelphia Story was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning two: Best Adapted Screenplay and Stewart for Best Actor.

Wartime during 1940s


Stewart enlisted in the Army in March 1941. He was posted to Moffett Field as an instructor pilot in single- and twin-engine aircraft just after the attack on Pearl Harbor brought the US directly into the conflict. In early 1942, Stewart was asked to appear in a propaganda film to help recruit the anticipated 100,000 airmen that the USAAF would need to win the war.

He was named the third Greatest Male Star of All Time by the American Film Institute.

He was the first major American movie star to wear a military uniform in World War II.
President Bill Clinton commented on his death, saying: "America lost a national treasure today. Jimmy Stewart was a great actor, a gentleman and a patriot."
