Poe became popular after his death He is considered as the master of the short story, as well as the father of modern crime drama (detective stories) He felt that a work of fiction was most effective if it could be read in one sitting to create a single effect. His famous single effect is horror

The Masque of the Red Death


The red death is fictional, however is based upon the very real threat of the Black Death or plague. Plague occurred in Europe from the 1300s to late 1800s.
Onset was quick, and death was within 3-5 days. Plague was almost always fatal.

Light represents good Darkness represents evil Church represents faith or holiness Dog represents loyalty

Abbey - a place where monks resided. Many were converted for noblemen and kings during the reformation.
Prince Prospero lives in a converted abbey.

Some are used as churches today.
