Child abuse is not a new phenomenon. The abuse and neglect of children has been documented for more than two thousand years. However, attempts to prevent child abuse are relatively new.
The first documented legal response to child abuse in the United States occurred in 1874. The New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals pleaded in court to have an eight-year-old child removed from her abusive and neglectful environment. Because there were no child abuse laws, the Society argued that the child was, in fact, an animal, and should be provided the same protection as other animals. During the last few decades of the 1800s, societies to protect children, from cruelty were formed in many states. (DHS Policy analysis) Laws against child abuse did not come about until 1961, when the American Academy of Pediatrics, held a conference on the battered child syndrome, which resulted in many states passing laws to protect children from physical abuse. Preventing Child Abuse Child abuse is now recognized as a problem of epidemic proportions. The violence and negligence of parents and caretakers, serve as a model for children as they grow up. The child victims of today, without the protection and treatment, often become the child abusers of tomorrow. As with any social issue, child abuse is a problem for the entire community. National Data on child abuse
Mission Statement: to provide financial support and scholarships to homeless children across the nation. To be a bearer of scholarships and financial education to bring up a new generation of educated and poised citizens. To bring heartfelt attention to the fight against child abuse, neglect, by also encompassing opportunities for educational advancement.
An estimated 3 million reports of child abuse involving 6 million children were made to child protection agencies. Approximately 62% were accepted for investigation or assessment. Less than one-third of the investigations and assessments (28.5%) confirmed child abuse. National studies continue to indicate that only about one-third of maltreated children are reported to child protection agencies. Significant numbers of victims remain unidentified without protection and treatment. In 1985, the U.S. Surgeon General declared family violence to be a national epidemic. The U.S. Advisory Board on Child Abuse and Neglect found domestic violence to be the single major precursor to child abuse and neglect fatalities in the United States. There were an estimated 599,000 victims of child abuse nationwide
No definition will please everyone but that said, pantomime is the art of using movement and facial expressions rather than primarily the spoken word to communicate. The word pantomime is used to refer to an individual as well as an actual production or performance. An individual can also be called a mime but the contention of some that pantomime can only refer to a production is contrary to both the historical and modern popular usage of the word.
In contrast to pantomime skills, which evolved from dance and circus related acrobatics, which is recognizable in the early silent films, there seems to be a deficiency of pantomime as an independent modern art form. Most pantomime is presently seen presented within other forms of theatre rather than as an art to itself. Many clowns use elements of pantomime rather than presenting themselves strictly as a mime. Despite many efforts towards a "pure" pantomime the word today is very loosely used, the skills are often incorporated into other forms of dance or performance art. The influence of pantomime has been seen in street performances, the "classical pantomime" as stereotyped by Decroux or Marceau and seems at present to have lost much of its popularity and many contemporary pantomimes struggle to find the opportunity to present their art in a pure form. Some might say that the idea of Marceau's L' Art du Silence has itself become nearly silenced. However, in the past few years, Pantomime has taken the churches by storm! Continually growing and creating a major impact on families in the form of mime ministry. We would like to introduce this memorizing art form to the public by allowing local youth pantomimes and mime ministry artists, the opportunity to highlight their performances and represent the voices of the abused or neglected children.
