Donald Dewar and Margaret Campbell

Donald Dewar and Margaret Campbell were the grandparents of Clayton Smith (Howard Clayton), and therefore our great-great-grandparents. Their daughter Sarah Dewar was Claytons mother. Donald Dewar is part of the ancient Dewar Family of Scotland. Several genealogies have been published on this family, however we have been unable to determine exactly who his parents were; and with the exception of one sister, we have no information about his siblings. We do know that his father was born in Ontario1 and his mother in Scotland. We also have the first name of his mother, Catherine2 As for Margaret Campbell we have no information at all regarding her family of origin. Fortunately, the census records do give a snap-shot, albeit a bare-bones one, of their lives together and their children. Donald was born on March 11, 1829 in Ontario, Canada3. , and Margaret between 1829 and 1830* in Ontario.4 We have no information on the dates of either Donald or Margaret's death. However, Margaret died sometime before 1871 as Donald is listed as a widow in the Canadian Census for that year. Margaret would have been between 40 and 42 years old when she died. Donald and Margaret had the following children: 1. Duncan Dewar, born 1850 in Argenteuil, Quebec 2. John Dewar, born Circa., 1851, Argenteuil, Quebec5 3. Sarah Ellen Dewar, born Circa 1852, Argenteuil, Quebec 4. Annie Dewar, born Circa 1854, Argenteuil, Quebec 5. Rory Dewar, born Circa 1856, Argenteuil, Quebec 6. Donald Dewar, born Circa 1858, Argenteuil, Quebec 7. William Dewar, born Circa 1867, Argenteuil, Quebec *Note: The dates on census records are often inaccurate and off by a year or two and these records differ from other records. For this reason, I have estimated the years of the children. The year may be a year earlier or later than stated. The date and year of Donald's death is unknown although it was after 1901 and likely before 1911 as no census record has been found for him in that year.
