Introduction This assignment will give you an understanding of the global environment in which the travel and tourism industry operates. You will examine the historical evolution of tourism, the current structure of the industry, the external influences on tourism and the impact tourism has on host communities and the environment. You will also investigate international and national government roles and assess their influence on the tourism industry. The effects of political change on the industrys operation will also be examined. Learning Outcomes covered in this assessment LO1 LO2 LO3 LO4 Task You are to research the travel and tourism industry using the ilearn materials, core textbook, suggested websites and independent research to produce an informal report which covers all of the tasks as detailed below. The report must cover all of areas in order to meet the pass criteria. As a report you are required to produce a title page, introduction, findings (answer to the tasks), conclusion and bibliography. Task 1 The history and structure of the travel and tourism industry Learning Outcome 1 Write a brief account which provides an explanation of the key historical developments of the travel and tourism industry from ancient times through to the current day. Include the development of the UK seaside resorts and the growth of package holidays through the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s to present. You need to include factors that contributed towards the growth of the industry and conclude with future developments that may affect the industry (1.1). Give a full explanation of the sectors of the travel and tourism industry, these should include transport, accommodation, tour operations, travel agents and visitor attractions. Include and links between the sectors, the impact of integration of the major tour operators (Tui and Thomas Cook) on the structure. The Leipers tourist system and the chain of distribution should be included and the ability to differentiate between the public, private and voluntary sectors (1.2). Provide an analysis of the function of government, by discussing their roles in relation to the tourism industry. In your answer include the range of government national and international agencies, and government sponsored bodies. The local, national agencies and government bodies can be taken from any country. In your explanation explain how the local and national policy can influence the success of the sector (2.1, 2.2). Task 3 The implications of political change Learning Outcome 2 Explain the implications of political change on the travel and tourism industry in at least two countries. Consider the reasons for government involvement in travel and tourism, the influence of government and how the industry would be impacted by a political change e.g. change in political party, change in the level of stability (2.3). Task 4 Investigate the effects of supply and demand on the travel and tourism industry Learning Outcome 3 Describe the main factors affecting tourism demand. Consider the influence of the key factors giving examples to explain their importance. You should use definitions of demand used in the core text book (3.1). Explain how supply has changed to meet the effects of demand. Using the changes in the market give three examples of the response that has been made by the industry to meet the changing needs of the consumer. These changes could include changing use of technology for booking products, increased consumer awareness of environmental issues, global recession, and you need to explain how selected sectors of the industry has responded by changing their products/services to meet this change in demand (3.2). Task 5 Describe the Positive and negative impacts of tourism Learning Outcome 4 Investigate and evaluate the main economic, environmental and social impacts of tourism and how they inter-relate. Provide an accompanying explanation to explain strategies that can be used to minimise the negative impacts of tourism whilst maximizing the positive impacts. In your explanation use of examples would be beneficial (4.1, 4.2).

You should use diagrams and tables of figures where appropriate in the main body of the report ensuring to reference their source. 4. You should include a bibliography at the end of the whole assignment using the Harvard referencing system 5. It is advised that you write your report within approximately 3500/4000 words in order for your research and summarising skills to be developed, and for effective time management. However, you are required to ensure that the assignments meets all of the learning outcomes and there is no penalty for being over the suggested word count.
