NEW METHOD OF POINTS AWARDING IN FOOTBALL
(ALSO KNOWN AS SOCCER]
Introduction,
Nowadays football (soccer) became a very tactic game. It happens a lot that both team will
play for a draw or that an already qualified team for the next stage of the competition is
Using reserves in the last game because they lead the group with 4 points or more and no
matter what they do, they are still qualified, All these tactics and others not mentioned in
this introduction are killing the football (soccer) show leaving the fans with few or no goals,
Which is the main reason they show up at the stadium. We need to make this sport more
interesting, more alive and more attra
2. The principle.
a) The aim of the following method is to make football (soccer) more interesting and the
game more alive. So if the home team has something to lose if they play for a draw on
the home-match they will surely try to win that game. Same thing (trying to win no
matter what) is valid for both teams in case they are defeated. Below are worked
‘examples of how the points are awarded after a match,
Example!: — Hometeam vs. Visitingteam 0:0
In this case each team is awarded 1 point for NOT WINNING. They
gain something (1 point) just for doing a draw. This is not fair,
especially for the visiting team that also has to confront the adverse
team fans, which can be quite intimidating. And the home team has
won 1 point for working less on the game than the visiting team
Example ll: Hometeam vs. Visitingteam 0:2
In this case Visitingteam wins 3 points (which is fair) but the loosing
team does not lose anything. They are not “penalised” for NOT
WINNING. This is not fair since they lost. They should be losing points
because they lost the game.
Example ili: Hometeam vs. Visitingteam 2:1
In this case Hometeam wins 3 points (which is fair) but the loosing
team does not lose anything. They are not “penalised” for NOT
WINNING. This is not fair since they lost. The visiting team should be
losing points because they lost the game.3.
b)_ The proposed method aims at changing the current method in order to give the football
(soccer) back to the fans because the fans are the only reason why football (soccer) is
alive after all. So the principle isto penalise losing teams and draw-ended games
because rewarding the winning only team is not enough. Below are two version of this
principle.
First version
~ Winning team gets 3 points
~ Losing team loses 3 points
- Ina draw game none of the teams is getting anything.
This version goes better with home-away games i.e. national leagues, UCL, etc.
Second version
1g team gets 3 points
- Losing team loses 3 points
- Ina draw game, the home team is losing 1 point and the visiting team is winning 1
point
This version goes better with competitions that don’t have home-away matches Le
World Cup, continental cups (national teams)
‘Organizing a national league season or a group of international competitions.
In order to allow losing team to lose points they have to have some points before the
season/competition start so that their balance points doesn’t go negative which would
confuse the fans and everybody else. So, in a league with 18 teams each team should start
the season with a certain number of points calculated like this: number of games (34) X 3
(maxim point available for winning on each game) i.e. in our league with 18 team the above
principle looks like this: 34x3=102. So each team starts the season with 102 points. As the
season goes by teams will lose points or add points to this sum depending on thelr
performance.
Example!: Team A ends season winning 22 games, losing 8 games and
obtaining 4 drasw (3 away, and 1 home). The final standings are
calculated like this:
First version102+22x3-8x3+4x0=144 points (see Annex A)
Second version102+22x3-8x3+3x1-1x1=146 points (see Annex B)Example il: UEFA Champions League, Group A, (2011-2012 season)
Group stage
comet A BC DEF GH
Group A
or
2 Oss
The final standings of this group would have looked like this with the new method:
Starting point for each team: 6 games X 3 points = 18 points
First versio nts on draw
Bayern: 18+(4x3)+(1x0)-(1x3)=27 points
Nopoli: 184(33)+(2x0)-(2x3)=24 points
‘Man. City: 18+(3x3)+(1x0)-(2x3)=21 points
Villareal: 18+(0x3)+(Ox0)-(6x3)=0 points
Explanation: At the total points were added points from won games and were
subtracted points for the lost games.
Second version = 1/+1 on draw
Bayern: 18+(4x3)-(Ox1)+(1x2)-(1x3)=28 points
Napoli 18+(3x3)-(1x1}+(1x1)-(1x3)=24 points
Man. City: 18+(3x3)-(111}+(0x1)-(2x3)=20 points
Villareal: 18+(0x3)-(0x0)}+(0x0)-(6x3)=0 points
Explanation: At the total points were added points from won games and draws
obtained away and were subtracted points for the lost games and draws obtained
home.
{As shown above final position of the teams at the end of the group stage doesn’t
change but the game will become more interesting. Suppose a team has the last
game home and leads the group with 4 points ahead the team placed second, While
the team placed second will try anything to win, the group leading team can play for
