Use and position


We use prepositions of place to indicate the position of a specific object or person.

John is on the sofa.

They are used with all nouns and come before the noun/pronoun.

QUESTION
They answer the question: WHERE

A: Where is the cat?

B: The cat is on the sofa.

IN

Where is the ball?

The ball is in the box.

/n/

IN expresses the situation of being enclosed.

ON

Where is the ball?

The ball is on the box.


ON expresses that something is in contact with a surface.

UNDER

Where is the ball?

The ball is under the box.


UNDER indicates that something is below or lower in place or position, with the idea of being covered.

Where is Johns house? It is next to Peters house.

NEXT TO indicates that one thing is near another thing.

BETWEEN

Where is Peters house? It is between Johns house and Bills house.

OPPOSITE expresses something is situated on the other side facing another thing.

OVER means above or higher in position/place.

IN FRONT OF means on the front part or side.
