Process Integration
w

It is a very efficient approach to improving the energy efficiency of large and complex industrial facilities. PI refers to the application of systematic methodologies that facilitate the selection of processing steps, and of interconnections and interactions within the process, with the goal of minimizing resource use. It can be used in new design in order to ensure that energy, water & raw material are used optimally. Pinch analysis is a systematic procedure for investigating the energy flow in a given process & for quantifying the minimum practical utility.

Application
w

Oil refinery units are generally well-designed, and refiners are active in improving energy efficiency. It is generally possible to improve energy efficiency, but investments are usually required to improve the performance. PI is applied specifically to help reduce fowling problems & to extend run times. It is an well developed methodology & applied in many refining units.

Targeting Techniques
w

It can be used to define energy saving scope & economics. Systematic design techniques can be used to develop projects to reduce these saving in practice. The PI analysis of a whole refinery is quite complex, and involves individual unit analysis, inter-unit analysis and utility optimization.

Typical Deliverables
w

The deliverables of a PI study are a function of the size, complexity, and particular issues of the plant, as well as the specific requirements of plant management. The typical deliverables may include the following: Assessment of current energy consumption efficiency; Heat and mass balance of the process, including a process simulation,.
