Sulfuric acid is produced from sulfur, oxygen and water via contact process

first stage, sulfur is burned to produce sulfur dioxide. S (s) + O2 (g) SO2 (g) Second stage SO2 then oxidized to sulfur trioxide using oxygen in the presence of a vanadium(V) oxide catalyst and 450 C at 1 atm. 2 SO2 + O2 (g) 2 SO3 (g) 5/16/12 (in presence of V2O5)

Effect of acid rain to enviroment

Formation : SO2 and NO2 react with water to formed sulphuric and nitric acid then falls as acidic molecules (acid rain)

Effect on trees and soils -nutrient in soil washed away, -released heavy metal from soil -affected photosynthesis on lake and aquatic - kill aqautic species - acidic lake water kill fish

The main pollutant that cause acid rain, industries eject Sulphur Dioxide and Nitrogen Oxide into the atmosphere which becomes part of the clouds and foms acid rain
