Sheldon Honors Biology 14 May 2012 Emerging Disease One emerging disease of our time is HIV/AIDS. HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency virus. AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. AIDS interferes with the immune system, so someone with the disease gets sick much more easily than someone without the disease. They are more prone to infection and can pass the disease to others through blood tranfusions, sexual encounters, or hypodermic needles. HIV is a retrovirus, so it uses reverse transcriptase to make DNA from the RNA genome. The DNA is then integrated into the hosts, so then the host cell will make more HIV viruses. This is what the virus looks like. Its emerging especially in africa.
