Causes Infection with some types of human papilloma virus (HPV) is the greatest risk factor for cervical cancer. Other risk factors include human immunodeficiency virus. Not all of the causes of cervical cancer are known, however, and several other contributing factors have been implicated. Human papillomavirus Human papillomavirus is the cause of 70% of cervical cancer globally. Women who have many sexual partners (or who have sex with men who had many other partners) have a greater risk. HPV can be transmitted by skin-to-skin-contact with infected areas. Cofactors Other risk factors for cervical cancer include: chlamydia infection, stress and stress-related disorders, dietary factors, hormonal contraception, multiple pregnancies, exposure to the hormonal drug diethylstilbestrol, and family history of cervical cancer.Early age at first intercourse and first pregnancy are also considered risk factors, magnified by early use of oral contraceptives.

Signs and symptomss The early stages of cervical cancer may be completely asymptomatic. But you may have symptoms if those cell changes grow into cervical cancer. Symptoms of cervical cancer may include:

Bleeding from the vagina that is not normal, or a change in your menstrual cyclethat you can't explain. Bleeding when something comes in contact with your cervix, such as during sexor when you put in a diaphragm. Pain during sex. Vaginal discharge that is tinged with blood.
