Differences between Spoken and Written Language

Speech - Sound - Speech organs - Ears - Paralinguistic features (pause, stress, intonation) - Extralinguistic features (gestures, nods, posture) - Thinking, speaking and listening; almost same time - Fail to understand means wont get a chance to listen to it again. - Speech is ephemeral.

Writing - Words on page - Hands to write - Eyes to read - Only words on page and punctuation marks available. - Writer; take time in composing - Reader; take time in reading and in re-reading what is written. - Writing is permenant. - Delayed. - Must wait for reply to his letters or review of his ideas. - Sophisticated and comple structures and vocabulary. - Well-organized because more time for planning. - Editing. - No mistakes visible.
