Summary of research.

Students have to hold positive beliefs about an activity to be motivated Needs to be a balance between whole language and explicit skills teaching. The later being important as students must experience success to be motivated (Baker 2000 in Kowalewski 2000) Social interaction opportunities should be provided and encouraged Students choice in reading material important for motivating students (Gambrell 1996 in Kowalewski 2000) Teachers can encourage motivation by sharing their own reading and communicating enthusiasm (Patrick, Hisley and Kempler 2000 in Kowalewski 2000)

Recommendations for 2012 based on the research Student reviews of books/reading material at corridor and regular assemblys Student involvement in Library content Rewards for reading such as book club vouchers Super kids for social interaction combined with reading Reading centres in classrooms with a variety of reading materials and stimuli such as book of the week or a magazine section with student involvement Study ladder as a interactive and informative way to teach explicit reading skills
