Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin honored New York families with children in active military duty as part of Blue Star Families' Day. The blue star flag originated in 1917 as an unofficial symbol of a child in the military. Blue Star Mothers of America is a support organization for mothers of current or former military members that dates back to World War II. McLaughlin said these families live each day not knowing the fate of their loved ones risking their lives to protect American freedoms, and that supporting the troops also means supporting the families left behind who hope and pray for their children's safe return.

McLAUGHLIN HONORS BLUE STAR FAMILIES
Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin (R,C-Melrose) recently honored New York families with children in active duty as a part of Blue Star Families Day. The blue star flag was created in 1917 by an Army captain from Ohio, and it quickly became the unofficial symbol of a child in service. Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. is a support organization for mothers of children serving, or who have served in the military, and it dates back to World War II. The families of our heroic servicemen and women live each and every day not knowing the fate of their loved ones who are risking their lives to protect our American freedoms, said McLaughlin. Our commitment to supporting our armed forces cannot end with the courageous troops overseas. We must support the families left behind that hope and pray every single day to see their children come home safe and sound. Assemblyman McLaughlin represents the 108th district, which consists of parts of Rensselaer, Albany, Greene, and Columbia counties.
