The motor being used for the turbine is from a shredder. It is a 12 VDC PM motor, with
a 5/16”dia. shaft with four teeth in a coarse worm-like arrangement. It looks sort-of like
a rifle barrel turned inside-out. The shaft is actually square, but the one-turn-in-about-
three-inches makes it really round.
I’m going to mount the motor through a piece of sheet-steel, just like it was originally
mounted. That will extend downward and then bend horizontally so it will mount to a
flat surface. The original prototype will probably use just a 2X4 with some sheet-
aluminum for a rudder. I will use voltage-regulation instead of furling at high speeds.
Excessive speeds will probably require some automatic dynamic braking in the future.
This is just a concept device right now. I just need to get it into some wind to see how
long the prop blades need to be.
Eventually this will be a vertical turbine, so I don’t have to mess with sliprings, etc. I’ll
use this to charge 12-volt batteries which will operate an inverter for 115 volts AC. We
have tossed out several UPSs, and I saved the ones that still work as inverters.
