Second Alevi festival has begun
THE SECOND Alevi festival,
organised by the Cultural Centre
in the UK, kicked off on Saturday
with an remembrance service for
some of the most distinctive poets
of Aleviism.
The six-day festival will include
stage performances, seminars and
panels, Alevi religious events and
music, and folk dancing. The final
day of the festivities will feature a
large open-air concert in Hackney
Downs park. There are around
250 thousand Alevis living in
London, organisers say, adding
that all members of the communi-
ty were invited.
Representatives from the Alevi
community, non-governmental
organisation directors and a num-
ber of UK members of parliament
were among the guests who
attended a promotional event for
the festival earlier this month.
In a speech he delivered to open
that evening, srafil Erbil, the cul-
tural centre's director, said they
wanted to inject a sense of identi-
ty into children and young people,
adding: "We have targeted a large
number of events at the festival at
such young people so that they, a
generation that was born and
raised in Britain, can learn about
and adopt their own culture."
The promotional evening was
hosted by Hackney's Labour MP,
Diane Abbot, and also saw a brief
speech by Eric Joyce, the MP for
Falkirk before a group of young
people performed the traditional
sema dance along to poetic lyrics
from Seher Ababa.

I and my colleagues in the board of governors
worked hard in the difficult and intensive condi-
tions that a city like London presents to carry out
important work for the North Cyprus economy. I
would like to state that we saw these services as a
flag race and that I am leaving my role in the
comforting knowledge that I did everything I was
expected to do, and more.
I wish my new friends, who take on CTCC in
a new era, the best of luck in their future endeav-
ours. I would like to thank each one of my loyal
colleagues for working alongside me. I hope that
the future team will be able to break the bonds
over North Cyprus, particularly the international
embargo, to allow the country to become inte-
grated politically and economically with the rest
of the world.

Real-life victim experiences of police
SEVEN students from
Hackney Community
College presented Hackney
Police with a film last week
that highlighted the experi-
ences victims of crime have
with police.
It was the result of project
devised by police officer Pam
Horgan, who contacted the
college to see if she could
work with the media students
to make a film, for the bene-
fit of new police recruits.
PC Horgan's aim was to
depict how victims of crime
feel they have been treated by
officers, from when they ini-
tially report a crime, through
to the final outcome, because
the initial impression created
by an officer can have a last-
ing impact on people.
The objective therefore was
to demonstrate that what
police do and the way they do
it can have an effect on the
lives of the victim, their fami-
lies and their community.
The college students, aged
19 to 21, are all studying on
the BTEC extended Diploma
in Creative Media, specialis-
ing in TV and film. This is an
advanced level, two year
course.
After taking the live brief
from Hackney Police, the stu-
dents worked together as a
group to produce a set of
interviews which were profes-
sionally edited by them to
create the film. The students
were given a real client to
work with, which in turn gave
them valuable skills which
they will be able to draw on
in their future careers.
"This is the start of a new
partnership, working togeth-
er, creating resources within
the community. It was also
positive for the students to
work with the police on this
project, proving really valu-
able for challenging stereo-
types," said Anna Johnson,
Media Co-ordinator at the
college.
PC Horgan added: I
would like to commend the
students who took part in this
project; their professional
approach was excellent. I
would also like to thank the
people who participated in
the film.
"Not only has this venture
given me a chance to work
with these young people, it
has strengthened our partner-
ship with the college. The
film is of great quality and
will be an excellent training
tool for new police recruits to
Hackney.
The students will be pro-
gressing to university after
their course at Hackney
Community College.

Preparing for London's paralympics
MEMBERS of the Australian
Adaptive Rowing team, consist-
ing of Kathryn Ross, Erik Horrie,
and John Maclean, are currently
finalising their Australia-based
training for the paralympics on
the waters of Lake Burley Griffin,
Canberra. A Wikinews interview
with Erik Horrie, an arms and
shoulder single scull competitor
who is moving towards his first
paralympics, asked him about his
preperations, and the sport in
general.
Mr Horrie, who is 32, said that
he is hoping for strong results for
the team in the preceding third
rowing world cup mid June in
Munich. 2011 is his debut year
rowing at a national level after a
background in wheelchair bas-
ketball, saw him place fourth in
his first World Cup event. In a
Canberra winter, temperatures
routinely remain sub-zero as ath-
letes prepare, early morning, on
the water. Mr Horrie commented
that despite the conditions,
which were a far cry from those
found by his Queensland-based
"Dragons" club, he trained six
times a week, including strength
sessions at the nearby Australian
Institute of Sport facilities, and
cross training.
Funding for the sport has
increased significantly in
Australia in recent years, espe-
cially since it's introduction to
the paralympics in Beijing. Mr
Horrie commented that compet-
itive successes have seen a
increase in funding toward the
programme.
A substantial allocation allowed
the Australian institute to host
four athletes on site and secure a
second fleet of boats for their
European base. Rowing equip-
ment is the most expensive: a
substantial cost at costing fifty
five thousand dollars for an
eight.Yet the institute runs active
talent searching programs to find
athletes, depsite their being a
limited pool of disable athletes to
draw upon.
PARALYMPIC HISTORY
The Paralympic Games are a
major international multi-sport
event where athletes with a phys-
ical disability compete; this
includes athletes with mobility
disabilities, amputations, blind-
ness, and cerebral palsy. There
are Winter and Summer
Paralympic Games, which are
held immediately following their
respective Olympic Games. All
Paralympic events are governed
by the International Paralympic
Committee. The Games have
grown from a small gathering of
British World War II veterans in
1948 to become one of the
largest international sport events
today
Even though 2012 will be
London's third Olympic Games,
it will be the first Paralympic
Games to be staged there, as the
event was created after the last
time the city hosted in 1948. It is
however the second time that the
United Kingdom hosts a
Paralympic Games, because the
1984 Summer Paralympics were
hosted in both Stoke Mandeville,
United Kingdom and Long
Island, New York, United States.
However, London does have
Paralympic roots of its own. The
first organized athletic event for
athletes with a disability that
coincided with the Olympic
Games took place on the day of
the opening of the 1948 Summer
Olympics in London, when Dr
Ludwig Guttmann of Stoke
Mandeville Hospital hosted a
sports competition for British
World War II veteran patients
with spinal cord injuries. The
first games were called the 1948
International Wheelchair Games,
and were intended to coincide
with the 1948 Olympics in the
British capital. Dr Guttman's aim
was to create an elite sports com-
petition for people with disabili-
ties that would be equivalent to
the Olympic Games.
322 people have already been selected for the
Paralympic torch relay, which takes place after this
summer' s Olympic Games

Extinct bee is back in British gardens
A SMALL population of
Bombus subterraneus, the
short-haired bumblebee, was
reintroduced to the UK this
week, a decade after being
declared extinct.
They come from Skne in
Sweden, where around 100
queen bees were captured. After
quarantine, around half of these
were rejected to avoid introduc-
ing parasites alongside the bees.
The rest have been released into
a nature reserve in Dungeness,
in southeastern England.
"We've screened for four dif-
ferent parasite species," explains
biologist Dr Mark Brown of the
University of London, where
the bees spent two weeks at
Royal Holloway. The parasites
"can all damage bees in different
ways."
Work has been ongoing at
Dungeness for years, establish-
ing flowers the bees are known
to like in meadows at the site,
which, although rural, lies at the
heart of an industrial area.
Habitat loss is blamed for the
bees' extinction in the UK, with
more intensive farming methods
destroying meadows. South
Sweden has less intensive farm-
ing, allowing the Swedish popu-
lation to thrive. A normal sur-
vival rate of 2030% is expected.
Organisations including the
Bumblebee Conservation Trust,
Natural England, and the Royal
Society for the Protection of
Birds are involved in funding
the project, with the reserve
itself belonging to the RSPB.
The bees were last seen in
Dungeness in the 1980s. The
same spot lost the shrill carder
bee at around the same time,
but shrill carder bees have
recently been rediscovered
there. It is the second attempt
to reintroduce short-haired
bumblebees to Britain, after an
effort in 2009 using bees
removed from New Zealand.
British bees were introduced to
New Zealand to aid pollination
before they were threatened.
The bees died in the UK and
tests established they had low
genetic diversity. There are plans
to add more bees to the
Dungeness programme to
increase genetic diversity there.

Marking sixty years on the throne
THE DIAMOND Jubilee of
Queen Elizabeth II is to be
marked this weekend with four
days of concerts, street parties and
thanksgiving services across the
United Kingdom.
Millions of people - from the UK
and abroad - are expected to be on
the move over the next few days
so that they can join in the
Queen's Diamond Jubilee bank
holiday celebrations in some form.
Unlike most weekends, London
Underground will be running near
normal services over the bank hol-
iday weekend, with only the
Waterloo & City line not operat-
ing and with part-suspensions on
the London Overground line.
Transport for London advised
motorists to avoid central London
for all but essential journeys over
the weekend.
Heathrow expects to handle 2.9
million passengers in the next two
weeks, with 780,000 overseas
travellers due to arrive at the west
London airport between
Wednesday and bank holiday
Tuesday.
UK travel organisation Abta has
forecast that as many six million
Britons will be taking a holiday
abroad or in the UK over the peri-
od June 2-5.
STREET PARTIES
Councils in England and Wales
have received nearly 9,500 road
closure applications to hold street
parties to celebrate the Jubilee.
The Local Government
Association said the figure dwarfed
the 5,500 applications for last
year's royal wedding and showed
the tradition had been "well and
truly resurrected".
There will also be other events
planned in gardens, parks, pubs,
village greens, care homes,
schools, cul-de-sacs and town
squares in their tens of thousands,
meaning that the scale of national
celebration looks set to surpass
anything experienced for decades.
Many local authorities have
waived road closure fees, offered
cash grants and given out party
packs to ensure celebrations go off
with a bang.
MONDAY CONCERT
Buckingham Palace is to host a
Diamond Jubilee Concert on
Monday afternoon. With music
master Gary Barlow of Take That
organising proceedings, the musi-
cal extravaganza will bring some
of the biggest names in pop
together including Paul
McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Jools
Holland, Jessie J, JLS and Elton
John to name a few.
Later that night, over 2,000 bea-
cons will be lit across the United
Kingdom, Channel Islands, the
Isle of Man and the
Commonwealth overseas to cele-
brate the special occasion. The
queen will light the National
Beacon, just like she did during
the Golden Jubilee celebrations in
2002.
THANKSGIVING SERVICE
A church service, featuring tradi-
tional hymns and world premieres
of new music with leading figures
from national life in attendance,
will be held at St Paul's Cathedral
on Tuesday. David Cameron is to
give a reading from the Bible dur-
ing the service, while Dr Rowan
Williams, the Archbishop of
Canterbury, will give the sermon
next Tuesday.
The Queen will be joined by the
Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of
Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, Duke
and Duchess of Cambridge and
Prince Harry along with other
members of the royal family.
A newly written trumpet fanfare
to mark the Queen's Diamond
Jubilee has been composed for the
service, to be performed by those
RAF musicians so memorable
from William and Kate's wedding
last year.

Shakespeare performed in Turkish
THE THEATRE group Oyun Atlyesi,
founded in Istanbul by former EastEnders
actor Haluk Bilginer, was in London last
weekend for a rare performance of
Shakespeares Anthony and Cleopatra in
the Turkish languge.
The acclaimed actor headlined the
tragedy in the role of Mark Antony, as part
of plans to perform Shakespeare in 37 dif-
ferent languages at the historic Globe the-
atre during the Cultural Olympiad, which
coincides with the Summer Olympic
Games.
Appearing opposite him was Zerrin
Tekindor as Cleopatra, Emre Karayel as
Sextus Pompey, Kevork Malikyan as
Gnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus and Mert
Frat as Caesar.
"It is very exciting to be here," Bilginer
said. "We are performing the work of the
world's most important scribe, and per-
haps his most important play, here on the
world's most important stage. The atmos-
phere here is amazing; it is like no other
theatre."
Tekindor added that she was also very
happy: "I've known of this place since my
school years and always wondered about
it. Years ago I came here as a tourist."
EASTENDERS PAST
Haluk Bilginer is best known in Britain
for playing Mehmet Osman, a Turkish
Cypriot character from the BBC soap
opera EastEnders, in the programme's
early years. Mehmet was portrayed as a
charmer, rogue and a serial womaniser,
and makes recurring appearances in
EastEnders from 1985 to 1987, and then
regularly until 1989.
After a string of extramarital affairs, his
character returns to North Cyprus to try
make amends with his estranged wife,
Guizin.

Fabrics in Southbank
sculpture from Turkey
TURKISH fabrics are among
those installed underneath the
14-metre "Under the Baobab"
sculpture, which has gone on dis-
play at London's Southbank
Centre as part of its Festival Of
The World in the run-up to the
Queen's Diamond Jubilee and
the Olympics.
The work was inspired by
Africa's baobab tree, which has
long been a symbol of communi-
ty. Rings, some four metres wide,
were used to build the tree before
it was covered in 80 different
types of fabric.
Serap Pollard, who was involved
in the project, said: "In Turkish
history, the tree was a symbol of
the great Ottoman Empire.
"It is a great source of pride that
traditional Turkish fabrics are
used in this project which will be
taking Turkish history into the
modern age and into a huge place
like London, which millions of
tourists visit.
"I am sure that all Turks will feel
this pride."
Creative director Beatrix Eden
told This is Nottingham that she
hoped the giant tree will spark
conversation between visitors
from different countries.
"During the summer, thousands
of people will gather in London
and visitors from across the globe
will be stepping closer to one
another," she said.
"Inspired by the idea of the
space between strangers becom-
ing smaller we created the
Baobab Tree as a unique meeting
place for chance encounters
sparking new conversations."
Billed as "the festival that has it
all", including an urban beach
with a twist, the largest ever UK
poetry festival and the chance to
work with and learn from the
worlds leading artists, the festival
intends to transform the summer
Southbank Centre into an inter-
national learning site that shows
how art transforms lives.
Baobabs reach heights of 5 to
30 metres and have trunk diame-
ters of 7 to 11 metres. An African
specimen in South Africa is often
considered the largest example
alive, up to recent times had a cir-
cumference of 47 metres. Its
diameter is estimated at about
15.9 metres.
Some baobabs are reputed to be
many thousands of years old,
which is difficult to verify, as the
wood does not produce annual
growth rings, though radiocar-
bon dating may be able to pro-
vide age data.
THE TURKISH singer Selda
Bacan is to perform at Londons
Queen Elizabeth Hall as part of
the Southbank Centre's festival,
Meltdown.
The festival, which has been
running since 1993 and each year
invites a different cultural figure
to act as director of the event and
pick the performers of their
choosing, will this year see a
Turkish performance.
Previous directors include: Elvis
Costello, David Bowie, Patti
Smith , Morrissey, Massive
Attack, Jarvis Cocker, Nick Cave,
and Ray Davies. This will be the
19th annual event, and is curated
by Antony Hegarty from Antony
and the Johnsons.
Meltdown is renowned for hon-
ouring the influence of cult
artists, and this year is no excep-
tion, as Hegartys Meltdown will
be remembered for reminding
the world of the space-age
Anatolian psych-folk-funk of
Selda.
I dreamed of assembling a
constellation of courageous
artists," said Hegarty, the new
director, "all of whom have used
their platforms as cultural pro-
ducers to challenge us. They have
exhibited a ferocity in their pur-
suit of beauty, and, falling like a
guillotine behind it, justice.
Born in 1948, Selda showed an
interest in music from an early
age, taking up the guitar and
reinterpreting hundred-year-old
Turkish folk songs. She has
always written songs that convey
her strong political views, and she
has been imprisoned on two
occasions.
Sampled by the likes of
2ManyDJs and Mos Def, the
Turkish singer-songwriters pro-
gressive approach to her music
and her brave political stance has
made her a cult figure to record
collectors and musicians ever
since the 1970s.
Selda joins a line-up that
includes celebrated musicians
Elizabeth Fraser, Lou Reed and
Marc Almond, as well as per-
formers from the New York
underground scene and singer-
songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie.
Antony Hegartys Meltdown
runs from 112 August 2012.

Hughes calls for 'more
proactive' UK in Cyprus
A SENIOR British politician
has become the first to fly Cyprus
through Ercan Airport, saying he
wanted to "make a statement of
solidarity" with Turkish Cypriots.
Simon Hughes, deputy leader
of the junior coalition partner
Liberal Democrats and MP for
Bermondsey and Old Southwark,
said he would "with urgency" be
reporting back to the govern-
ment and all political parties the
need to reach a solution in
Cyprus and for the international
isolation of the Turkish Cypriots
to be ended.
He also said he agreed with the
Turkish Cypriots that the peace
talks should not be open-ended -
something he described as "a rea-
sonable approach" - adding there
was a need to change the method
of negotiation to make it more
inclusive and to add impetus to
the process.
Mr Hughes, who arrived at
Ercan on a Pegasus flight from
Stansted on Sunday, said the
main purpose of his visit was to
hear from both sides about the
Cyprus problem.
He told Cyprus Today: "I have
visited the North and have spo-
ken with the government and the
people here. I have seen the diffi-
culties arising from the isolations
on trade, sports and business -
[an end to] these would, I
believe, help the process and
bring about a solution.
"The best future for Cyprus is
for the whole island to be open
to the wider world. Keeping one
part of the island isolated is not
in the interests of Cyprus, the
region or Europe."
Mr Hughes added: "We have to
find ways of ending the isolations
. . . I know the complexities. I
understand the history. Time is
running out for a settlement but
the needs of the people of the
North are not going away.
"There should be trade and
business with the North. I visited
North Cyprus through Ercan to
make it clear that I am supportive
of the Turkish Cypriots and
indeed both communities.
"I have travelled many times to
Larnaca and wanted to make it
clear that I am supportive of both
communities."
Mr Hughes held talks with
President Dervi Ero lu and
Prime Minister rsen Kk on
Monday and also met other
politicians, trade union officials
and civil groups.
He talked of the need for a dif-
ferent approach to be used in the
Cyprus peace talks, involving
other political parties and "key
players" on the island, including
trades unions.
He also suggested the UK gov-
ernment should be more closely
involved, along with other gov-
ernments, to try to add impetus
to the negotiations.
He added that there was a need
for "political will from both
sides" if there was to be a com-
prehensive settlement.
"Upon my return to the UK I
will brief the government and
political parties on my visit and
the urgency to help make the
talks a success. I personally am
very committed to bringing
peace and a settlement. I have
been involved in Cyprus for 40
years since I was a student. I want
to bring this issue to the agenda
of the EU.
"The Olympic games are com-
ing up in the UK, but not all
people of Cyprus are taking part
in this event. It is not right for
the Turkish Cypriots to [have to
take] part through Turkey."
Mr Hughes was expected to fly
to Ankara yesterday to meet
Turkish officials, before returning
to the UK.

president Mehmet Ali Talat
Woman dies of rabies after dog bite
A WOMAN has died while being
treated for rabies at a London hos-
pital after being bitten by a dog in
south Asia.
The woman, widely reported in
the press to be a grandmother in
her 50s, was reportedly turned
away twice by doctors at Darent
Valley Hospital in Dartford, Kent,
before she was finally diagnosed.
She was being treated at London's
Hospital for Tropical Diseases.
In a statement, University
College London Hospitals NHS
Foundation Trust said: "We regret
to announce that a patient being
treated for rabies by the Hospital
for Tropical Diseases and col-
leagues at University College
Hospital died over the weekend.
"The patient's family have kindly
requested for the media to respect
their privacy during this very diffi-
cult time and we will not be releas-
ing any further details, nor will the
family be making any statements.
Our sincere condolences go out to
them."
Rabies is usually transferred
through saliva from the bite of an
infected animal, with dogs being
the most common transmitter of
rabies to humans. It is a viral dis-
ease that causes inflammation of
the brain in warm-blooded animals.
For a human, rabies is almost
invariably fatal if treatment is not
administered prior to the onset of
severe symptoms.
More than 55,000 people are esti-
mated to die from the disease every
year, with most cases occurring in
developing countries, particularly
south and south-east Asia. Britain
was declared rabies-free in the early
20th century. The hospital previ-
ously reassured patients, visitors
and staff there was no risk to them
as a result of the case. An investiga-
tion was launched into how the
woman was reportedly turned away
from the hospital emergency
department. A spokesman for
Darent Valley Hospital, one of the
hospitals were the woman was
turned away, said last week: "The
UK is rabies-free. If a patient does
present at hospital with vague
symptoms, a doctor is unlikely to
consider rabies as a diagnosis unless
the patient highlights wild animal
contact in an at-risk country. The
hospital responded to the informa-
tion supplied by the patient at the
time. "Although there are no cases
of rabies being passed through
human-to-human contact, the five
members of staff that came into
close contact with the patient are
being vaccinated as a precautionary
measure. We have launched an
investigation into the circum-
stances around this lady's atten-
dance at the emergency depart-
ment and we are working closely
with the Health Protection
Agency."
A TURKISH national
accused of double murder was
caught on CCTV holding his
young daughter under his arm
while carrying a knife, a jury has
heard.
The pictures showed Ensar
Gl, 22, of Ireton Court,
Thame, walking in the town's
High Street on 4 September
2011.
The images were captured
after he stabbed to death his 28-
year-old wife Michaela, and his
mother-in-law Julie ahin, 50,
in the family home, Oxford
Crown Court was told.
Mrs Gl and Mrs ahin were
found by police after being
stabbed with a kitchen knife.
Casey Wilson, 20, a family
friend, was also stabbed but sur-
vived the attack.
Mr Gl denies two counts of
murder and one of attempted
murder.
"I will never forget the look in
the daughter's (Michaela Gl's)
eyes," Richard Rooke, of South
Central Ambulance, told the
jury.
"It was of pain and suffering
and that is something I will take
to the grave."
Mr Rooke said he went back
to his vehicle and "shed a few
tears".
Prosecutors said that he had
boasted on Facebook hours
before the alleged double mur-
der, saying that his English
bride and mother "would be
cut.
He wrote on the social net-
working site: "Have a look, all
the English papers will talk
about me tomorrow. The crazy
wolf Turkish Turk who covered
London in blood. The knife is
ready, you know I'm handy with
a knife."
Hours before killing his wife
he then had sex for a second
time with a woman, Wendy
Hazel, who he had met in a pub
a week earlier where the pair
first had intercourse.
Mr Gl, a restaurant worker,
had met his Michela while she
was on holiday in Turkey in
March last year. She fell preg-
nant and Mr Gl subsequently
moved to England to be with
her and their son.
The case continues.

THE Liberty pressure group
said that the plans for so-called
Secret Justice were "even worse
than first imagined", and that by
removing Inquests lawmakers
had "given cover for the removal
of judicial discretion over Public
Interest Immunity".
The warning came in response
to the new Justice and Security
Bill, published this week by
Justice Secretary Ken Clarke, who
claimed the proposals were sub-
stantially improved from those
which went out to consultation
last year.
Under the bill, new rules would
be created that would allow evi-
dence to be heard in secret - a
process known as closed material
proceedings or CMP. This would
only take place in civil court cases
where national security is a factor.
HIGHLY FLAWED
But Liberty described the bill as
"ironically-titled" and its envis-
aged system as "highly flawed",
as "the Government would effec-
tively be able to rely on secret evi-
dence to defend serious allega-
tions in any case where it feels
disclosure might harm 'the inter-
ests of national security'.
"The claimant would not be
shown such material or even be
allowed in the Court neither
would their lawyer, the public or
the press. Only the judge, the
Government itself and the
Government-appointed Special
Advocate would be present."
Shami Chakrabarti, the director
of Liberty, went on: "Not as spun
but as published, this Bill would
end equal open civil justice, put-
ting ministers and securocrats
above the law.
Judges are made fig-leaves,
robbed of their current Public
Interest Immunity discretion and
so effectively required to comply
with Ministers desires for secre-
cy.
We knew the Bill would create
a contest with one team perma-
nently off the pitch. Now the
farce is complete with a gun to
the referee's head."
CLARKE DEFENCE
But launching the Bill, which
was published after a first reading
in the House of Lords, Mr Clarke
said the plans had been improved
following consultations.
"Protecting the public cannot
come at the expense of our his-
toric freedoms. That principle is
absolutely right and has guided
the Government's response," he
said.
"The Bill now ensures that no
evidence given openly in court at
the moment can be given in
secret in future and gives the
judge the final decision about
whether any evidence at all can be
heard in closed session. Only civil
cases involving national security
evidence will be affected. The
proposals were never intended to
apply to criminal cases."
Labour's Sadiq Khan, the shad-
ow justice secretary, said the
Government had been "sloppy"
ever since launching its proposals
on changing "our centuries-old
