Rachael Somes EDU 695 Artifact 5A: Letter of Thanks for Mentoring New Teachers NBPTS Standards - Proposition

5 Standard: Teachers are Members of Learning Communities. Rationale: As teachers, we can all look back at our undergrad studies and most likely have the common thought that the practicum experience was the most important part of the program. After years of teaching later, hosting a mentor teacher in my own classroom has provided countless opportunities to reect on my own practice, to discuss emerging and established educational theories and ideas, to model and evaluate effective teaching strategies, and to become a mentor and guide to the future of our profession. The experience has proven to be a very rewarding chance for enjoyment and professional growth. Reection: Many educators may look at the experience of having a student teacher in the class as a forum in which they are offering experience and advice to a new member of the world of education embarking on their journey. This is true, however, I feel as though I learn just as much information by hosting student teachers in my classroom as I give to them. I have been hosting student teachers for the past eight years and through this opportunity, I am able to reect on my own teaching and think about and question my educational practices in a positive way. I am able to take a small step back in these moments and really think about the decisions I make in the classroom each day that shape the educator I have become and continue to strive to become. I welcome these opportunities with open arms and gain a sense of pride in knowing that I have been there for a new teacher starting out, just as someone was there for me when I was in their shoes.
