BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE, PILANI Second Semester 2009-2010 AAOC C321: CONTROL SYSTEMS TEST I (CLOSED

D BOOK) MM: 60 Q.1. Time: 50 Min Date: 11-02-2010

Draw the labeled block diagram, of a domestic central heating system described as: A thermostat having dial, to set the required temperature and it also has an input of the actual temperature. The thermostat operates as a switch and actuates the solenoid valve. Solenoid valve controls the flow of fuel to central heating furnace. The heating furnace outputs heat via steam flowing through radiators in the house. [6]

Q.2.

For the Electromechanical system shown in Fig Q.2, write the governing equations and determine the transfer function Y(s)/V(s). The force produced by solenoid is proportional to the current through the coil. The effect of back emf is neglected. [20]

Q.4.

A DC motor is used to drive the pen mechanism of the recorder through a gear train of reduction ratio 1:5. Recorder is used for recording the input voltage signal Vr. Pen arm is exactly positioned (L) on a scaled chart by taking its feedback with the help of sliding potentiometer mechanism attached to pen arm assembly. The amplified error is fed to the armature terminals of motor. Following are the parameters of the system Amplifier gain (KA) = 5 V/V; Potentiometer sensitivity (KP) = 3 V/rad Torque constant (KT) =1 Nm/A; Back e.m.f. constant (Kb) = 1 V/rad/s Armature Resistance (Ra) = 1 Moment of Inertia of Load (J) = 5 kg.m2 Friction Coefficient of Load (B) = 1 Nm/rad/s Moment of inertia and friction of the motor are negligible. For this system, (a) Draw the block diagram (b) Determine the transfer function

L (s) and VR (s)

[20]

(c) Determine the sensitivity for change in KA (take KA=5) at =1rad/s.
