Grade 3 Weekly Update Week of June 4, 2012

Unit Last week we enjoyed Mrs. Samiis visit as she shared her familys migration story. We are also enjoying the stories the students share. They learned so much from completing their family tree. Our Kreuzberg field trip is booked for June 15. We had some lefteover money from our Arendsee trip, so the cost of this trip is reduced for students who went to Arendsee. Our trip will include a visit to a mosque, a walking tour of the Krezberg area focusing on the influences of immigration (and including a baklava treat!), and end with a walk through the Turkish Market for lunch (each student should bring 3-5 Euros for lunch). Permission slips will come home this week. Please return this with the payment (lunch money should not be given in). Look out for interview questions for upcoming Voicethread migration project. Your child should identify a family member who has an interesting migration story to share and be ready to let us know the name on Friday. This is the last week for word study in third grade. When your child brings home their portfolio for the final time please look at their progress in the first 300 common words in English. By the end of 3rd grade they should be able to read and spell all of these words. All classes will be writing letters, some to authors. This week we continue to look at shape, review areas of difficulty, and introduce probability. We will be completing an end of unit assessment covering most number work.

Notes from Specialists Sports Day Elementary School Tuesday 19th June 8 am -3pm. Dear Parents, General information Like last year, we will be running a Sports Day for the Elementary School students on our own campus. It is a day of fun, action but also one of team work and collaboration. Above all it is a wonderful get together and one that provides the students with an opportunity to show what they have been doing in our subject and that Physical Education is for all. The Sports Day will start in the morning 08.15 am with an opening with all classes, from EC3/4 to grade 5. At 09.00 am the EC3/4 up to grade 1 will go indoors in the sports hall for their Day of Sport which will finish at 11 am (more detailed information will follow through Ben Dutton). Grade 2 till grade 5 will be outside for the whole day with breaks and lunch time included. All classes will meet outside at the end of the day for a final whole Elementary School tug of war before we will thank everybody and end the day. The students will be doing track and field events but also fun activities like spoon race and team games like football. This has been a fantastic event in recent years and both students and parents fully enjoyed it. We need your help come and join us in running the events!! To run a day like this we are looking for volunteers among our parent body. Each activity will have a PE teacher to run it so you would be assisting them. We are also looking at jobs like umpiring, score keeping, first aid (assisting our nurse). In general there are many small things to do and all the help is more than welcome, it is needed!. If you are keen to be involved in this wonderful day (or parts of!) please inform Joost Langendonck by email (joost.langendonck@bbis.de) . As said, PE staff will be in charge of an event but we need parents to help with measuring, keeping students in order, in general providing support. We need around 20 to 30 helpers so bring a friend! Thank you very much for your support and we hope to hear from you or see you on the day. David Sexsmith Erika Victor david.sexsmith@bbis.de erika.victor@bbis.de Kind regards, Joost Langendonck

Other The school library will be open on Wednesdays throughout the summer from 10-12, so that students can check out books, read together, or talk about books. Reading is the best way for your child to keep up in the summer. Each homeroom teacher will be sending home other ideas to try out in the summer as well. Used Book Sale will return at Summer Fest and we need your book donations. Please bring used books to room 1109 (next to the library) for any age reader in any language. Thanks! The Elementary Spring Concert will take place on June 7 at 1:00. I have created a SQWORL to list many fun and educational sites to explore this summer. If you find more that I should share, please let me know. http://sqworl.com/wc752g PLEASE NOTE: There is no school lunch available on the day of Sports Day. We will picnic on the field, so please send in a packed lunch. Can your child join us for the PARADE of NATIONS at the Summer Fest this Saturday? Meeting time and place: Meet Lisa Roy in the cafeteria at 10:50 on Saturday, June 9 to get organized. Parade starts at 11:00 and ends with the students singing on the stage. It is a BBIS tradition is to kick-off the Summer Fest with a parade of students dressed to share their country of origin (e.g. traditional clothing, national colors, face paint, anything creative!), playing loudly on rhythm instruments and waving flags as they march around the Summer Fest!
