Reds Select High School Pitcher With Their First Pick Of 2012 Draft Take RHP Nick Travieso With 14th Pick
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati Reds Senior Director of Amateur Scouting Chris Buckley tonight announced the selection of RHP Nick Travieso (6-3, 220) from Archbishop McCarthy High School in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida with the team's first pick (14th overall) of the 2012 first-year player draft. Later tonight, the Reds will select their second and third players with overall picks 49 (as compensation for the loss of Type B free agent Ramon Hernandez to the Rockies) and 57 (as compensation for the loss of Type B free agent Francisco Cordero to the Blue Jays). Travieso, 18, in 7 regular season starts compiled a 0.76 ERA with 70 strikeouts and just 21 hits, 11 walks and 5 earned runs allowed in 46.1 innings. He produced 2 complete games, 1 shutout and a 0.69 WHIP in 2012. The first-year player draft will resume tomorrow and Wednesday at noon via conference call.
