What would you do if someone ran by and attempted to steal your pocketbook? Well, in, Thank You Mam by Langston Hughes, one of the main characters had this happen to her. This Lady goes by the name of Mrs. Jones. A boy named Roger was the one that attempted to steal her pocket book. In this story, Roger was a maverick boy that changes from being a disrespectful thief, to a respectful young man. Roger is a teenage boy (88) that comes from an unstable home environment. At first he does not care about what he is doing. However, throughout the story he starts changing because of Mrs. Jones. Mrs. Jones then takes Roger to her house to wash up (88). Mrs. Jones then explains that stealing is not the best way to go in life. Roger starts listening to her because she is very intimidating. Mrs. Jones is an a large woman with a large purse (88). Mrs. Jones is a type of woman that does not put up with people stealing or being disrespectful. Mrs. Jones then explains to Roger that she used to be like him(89) and he promises not to steal again. In conclusion, Roger changes from a disrespectful boy to a well mannered young man because of Mrs. Jones. Through the characterization of Roger and Mrs. Jones, Langston Hughes may be suggesting that people should show and have more respect for one another. If people would treat each other with respect it would make our world happier and not full of hate.
