Say you like gardening and are used to using Nutra-fertilizer for your tomato plants.

The company that makes Nutra-fertilizer comes out with a new and improved version (Supra-fertilizer) that they claim will increase plant growth. You decide to test their claim and grow plants with both fertilizers and measure their heights as follows (after growth for 1 month) Nutra-fertilizer 48.2 cm 54.6 58.3 47.8 51.4 52.0 55.2 49.1 49.9 52.6 Supra-fertilizer 52.3 cm 57.4 55.6 53.2 61.3 58.0 59.8 54.8

Write out the hypotheses to be tested. Given an alpha of 0.05, test the hypothesis. Are the variances equal? Are the data normally distributed? Answer on next page.

Pooled var = 10.71 cm^2 Pooled SEM = 1.55 cm t = -2.99 tcrit 0.05(1),16 = 1.746 (one-taled test) reject null; P=0.0043 run and Ftest for variance equality run normal probability plot (see handout) for normality
