Test:

if warmed with acidified potassium Dichromate (VI) the soloution will turn from orange to green. Add Phosphorus (V) chloride (PCl5) and steamy fumes of HCl will form which turn damp blue litmus paper red.

Combustion
Alcohols will burn in excess oxygen to form Carbon dioxide and water

Substitution
If phosphorus chloride is added it form steam white fumes of HCl and leave a halogenoalkane and water

C3H7OH C3H7Cl + HCl + PCl5

Oxidation

Primary alcohol
If a primary alcohol is heated under reflux with acidified potassium dichromate (VI) (concentrated sulphuric acid is used to acidified then a carboxylic acid will form. If it is heated under distillation with acidified potassium dichromate (VI) (dilute sulphuric acid) then it will form an Aldehyde.

Substitution
Secondary alcohol
If a secondary alcohol is heated under reflux with acidified potassium dichromate (VI) then it will form a Ketone If sodium is added to an alcohol the sodium will displace the alcohol and the ionic compound sodium propoxide will form. Fizzing will be seen and a white solid will form
