Scope of the course

With the advances in semiconductor and communication industries, it has become important for Electrical Engineers to develop a good understanding of System design using FPGA. HDL (Hardware Description Language) and FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) devices allow designers to quickly develop and simulate a sophisticated digital circuit, realize it on a prototyping device, and verify operation of the physical implementation. As these technologies mature, they have become mainstream practice. Now a PC and an inexpensive FPGA prototyping board can be used to construct a complex and sophisticated digital system. In recent times, higher end digital controllers are being employed for the control and embedded applications. The high processing speed, programmability and computational power offered by these controllers have enabled the design of complex algorithms. The objective of this short term course is to explain the basics of FPGA programming and its effective usage for embedded control and real time applications. The laboratory classes will enable the participants to gain an in-depth knowledge of programming FPGA and its applications. The following topics will be covered in the course: Basic HDL programming concepts Digital IC design flow

Real-time applications - Motion control - Video processing - Micro-stepping scheme FPGAs for Embedded System Design Hands-on experience will be given to the participants for FPGA based motion control and embedded system design.
