Engro Fertilizer
Changing vision into reality

The completion of Engro-Enven 1.3 Ammonia Urea Complex, the largest in Asia is one of the most commendable achievements of Descon in recent years. The complete plant was constructed, commissioned and handed over to the client in due time for operations. We thank Engro for their patronage and Descons construction team who drove the project and showed complete commitment to the achievement of the milestones.

The main engineering contractor was the Italy-based Snamprogetti S.p.A (now known as Saipem). Descon was well-known to both Engro and Snamprogetti as it had done the construction works of the PakVen 600 project in the early nineties. Similarly for Snamprogetti, Descon had worked on several projects: FFC-II, Umm-Al-Nar refinery and Asab Gas 1 in Abu Dhabi. At the peak of the project, Descon had a deployment of 7,600 personnel at the project site. The project was completed successfully with 40 million safe man-hours. Apart from the general contracting scope, Descon was also awarded the carbon dioxide recovery and water treatment plants on EPC basis. Today, the highest prilling tower at this plant speaks of the hard work, dedication and excellence of its builders.

Engro Fertilizer Expansion Plant-Enven 1.3

Four years back in March 2007, Engro Chemicals discussed Descon's participation in its biggest investment to date. The project, Enven 1.3, envisaged the setting up of the largest single train urea manufacturing plant in the region at a cost of over one billion dollars. It would be Descon's largest project in the fertilizer industry in Pakistan. 04

ELIXIER 2 (Mirfa 1)
Construction of air separation plant
by Syed Qaiser Naqvi

The Mirfa 1 project is an air separation unit for nitrogen generation. The air separation plant is meant to separate the atmospheric air into its primary components, typically nitrogen, oxygen, argon and inert gases. Among various technologies, the most common one is via cryogenic distillation. This process was pioneered by Dr. Carl von Linde in the early 20th century and is still used today to produce high purity gases. The Linde group is a pioneer in the business of design and construction of such plants with over 2,800 air separation plants in 80 countries. Hence, the project awarded by Elixier (a joint venture between ADNOC and the Linde Group) proves Descon's technical and professional competence in constructing this plant. The project is designed for the production of 670,000 standard cubic meters per hour of nitrogen from two trains which will be sent through 40 km pipeline to gas wells at Habshan. The injection of nitrogen to these wells will enhance their production capacities. The initial contract was for civil, mechanical and TSF/camp works. Descon's fast track performance with no compromise on HSE and quality, lead the client to choose Descon for E&I and HVAC works as well. The scope of work includes construction of 8 buildings, 5,500 tons of equipment, 2,400 tons of steel structure, tanks, cold boxes, piping (including aluminium) four substations, CCTV, PA and telecom systems. Regarding HSE, over 4 million man-hours have been achieved without a single LTI.

Important milestones: Analyzer building foundation of Train 1 Underground conduits & trenches for cables for trains 1 & 2 HVAC works in ASU substation trains 1 & 2 ASU substation common facilities

Descon Oxychem Limited

From Wahga to Attari

On 14th September 2010, Descon Oxychem made history by becoming the first Pakistani Hydrogen Peroxide producer to export to India through Wahga. The initial consignment of 200 metric tons of packed Hydrogen Peroxide departed from T-10 station Lahore on Tuesday evening, was interchanged at Wahga during the night and reached Attari station by the next morning. This is but another step by Descon Oxychem Limited in its commitment to establish itself as a completive producer of Hydrogen Peroxide in the international market. Previously, the only route available for Descon Oxychem products to India was via the sea channel; a route that not only entails a 3 day land transit from the DOL plant to sea port terminals, but also another two days for sailing, subject to the availability of a vessel. This shorter alternative and more effective route substantially cuts down the freight costs, reduces transit time and greatly increases the number of 10 markets within the Indian region. January 2011 saw another breakthrough in trade of Hydrogen Peroxide as Descon Oxychem yet again pioneered the delivery of its products into India, this time via the land route through Wahga to Amritsar. This strategic delivery route now allows Descon Oxychem to deliver its product within a span of 24 hours, which in any business is a huge positive for the customer, thereby extending the Descon brand name in regional market of bordering India. With two international distributorships signed with two major trading houses in India, Descon Oxychem is ready to serve its customers in India, with high quality products and an effective distribution network. If current performance in this market is to be used as an indicator for the future, then it is safe to say, that for Descon Oxychem - the best is yet to come.

A benchmark in quality manufacturing

A decade of excellent service to the oil, gas & petrochemical industry

AMW is now directly working for the UAE national companies like Adnoc and with its approved contractors. Recent projects have seen its production at the highest peak; for the fabrication of piping up to 70,000 dia-inches per month and steel structure/process equipment/tanks up to 1,000 tons per month.

modules, furnace stacks, duct systems, 16,500 dia-inches of external piping and 14,500 dia-inches of cracked gas piping. This project was awarded based on AMWs technical expertise. The welding procedure for A-335-P91 was a matter of concern from the client. This was prepared and implemented successfully with less than 1% welding repair rate which was appreciated by Linde Engineer ing and Borouge . The seven furnaces contained 49 convection modules with a maximum weight of 220 tons per module. Convection modules (54,000 ID piping) contained CS, SS, & alloy finned tubes including 10,000 ID of A335 P91 tubes. The complete fabrication, anchor welding, refractory works, tube insertion, welding, painting and transportation was included in the scope. Based on this performance, AMW was rewarded with another order of 49 convection modules and piping for Borouge-III.

Students are provided with all safety gear like uniform, safety shoes, helmets, goggles, gloves, face shields etc., so they may have a hands-on knowledge of the Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE). Training on Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) is imparted to all the trainees in joint sessions of all trades and within the individual trade course training, to make sure that they adapt all these standards during their performance of the respective jobs assigned to them. The quality of our trained workforce is recognized all around and these successful trainees have become an earning source for their families and graduate to a higher social level.

Inspired by the success of our current programs and keeping in view the industry requirements, we have started supervisory / foreman level courses, since the current diploma holders (DAEs) available in market are lacking the professional and practical knowledge required in the construction industry. The beneficiaries or the students of these courses are DAE holders with 50% plus marks or the technicians who have worked in the industry for two to three years and have a hunger to gain more professional skills and knowledge. The duration of these courses is three months. Currently, we have started courses of mechanical, electrical supervisor while we are planning to start following supervisory / foreman level courses: Piping Welding Millwright Scaffolding & Rigging AutoCAD Operator Fabrication Civil Instrumentation Painting & Blasting Insulation & Refractory

We are also planning to add vocational training courses like instrument technician, airless spray painter / blaster, insulation and heavy duty mechanic.

Corporate Social Responsibility

DTI also started a short computer application course for semi-disabled persons under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program. The main purpose and objective of this program is to uplift the social and learning level of these deserving people who are suffering from partial disability. DTI had successfully star ted the program with a state-of-the-art computer lab. The first batch went under training from April 2008 for one month training and after this the students were capable enough to start earning reasonable income to suppor t themselves and their families. DTI is offering this course free of cost and also provides free pick and drop service, lunch, tea and accommodation for the trainees. The course has been designed to maximize learning required to perform the job of a data entry clerk / computer operator. We take pride in our students as most of them are employed as soon as they graduate. At DTI, we have many success stories in the form of our students and this has only become possible due to extra efforts, hard work of our faculty and by the strength of our evaluation system.

DTI is playing its small par t in improving the society by becoming a breeding nursery for workers and supervisors of this part of the world. We are continuously learning, developing and improving ourselves as in the words of Johnetta Betsch Cole.

News from our partner...

Energy, Efficiency, Environment The long-established company MWM in Mannheim, Germany, is one of the world's leading system providers of highly efficient and eco-friendly complete plants for decentralized power supply with gas and diesel engines. The company stands for the reliable, uninterrupted provision of electricity, heat and cooling at all times and at any location. The engines can run on natural gas as well as special gases like sewage gas, biogas, coal-mine gas and landfill gas. MWMs gensets cover a power range from 400kW to 4300 kW for decentralized power production.

Partnering for growth

In pursuit of our vision to provide complete power solutions, DPS is looking into possibilities of supplying diesel generators in Pakistan. Mr M. Abou El Nasr, representative of Mets Energy Lebanon, visited Descon Headquarters to discuss the prospects of Mets Energy working along with Descon Power Solutions. Descon Power Solutions is a valuable platform for Mets Energy to gain access to the market having significant potential for growth.

R & D 24x7!
MWM enhances efficiencies yet again! Keeping up with the tradition to be the best, MWM constantly upgrades its product line. Following the successful introduction of several efficiency enhancement packages for gas genset series, the Mannheim-based company MWM has now introduced the new TCG 2020 K which is: highly robust suitable for isolated operation gives increased inlet air temperatures and setup heights which is especially valuable for deployment in Asian countries. The engine, which is designed for operation with natural gas, supersedes its predecessor of the same designation and the previous model TCG 2020 OLS and will also be built in a V12 and a V16 version. The development has resulted in a 10% performance increase and improved efficiency. The company states the electrical output at 1,125 kW for the V12K variant and 1,500 kW for the V16K. With a 400 V generator, the electrical efficiency for both cylinder types is 41.0%.

National Bank of Pakistan banks on DPS

DPS brings the most efficient global technology to Pakistan along with high quality services, which is why National Bank of Pakistan chose DPS for their requirement of self-generation. For this project of 5.2 MW, 4 gensets of TCG 2020 V16K have been installed and commissioned at NBP headquarters in Karachi.

MWM Wins European Media Award

At the recent World Media Festival in Hamburg, MWM garnered the international intermedia-globe 2010 silver award for the best film in the documentation/point of sale category. The documentary "60 MW around the world" showed the production of 15 TCG 2032 gas gensets (4.3MW per genset) at MWMs factory and their subsequent journey of 10,000 miles to Bangladesh. The film also focuses on the handling at the Hamburg port and various stages in the country of destination. The 15 gensets were sent to a natural gas-powered plant in Ashugong, Bangladesh, which generated a total of 60 MW for the public grid. The storyline is "without words" and is only supplemented by occasional text char ts, thereby overcoming language barriers in an elegant way. To view the video, visit www.mwm.net. 34

At Interworld, the scenario is quite similar, with the added trait of taking pride in promoting sports and healthy competition. DHA Basketball Challenger Cup is just one example where 16 teams of the city participated in an exciting tournament played under the banner and sponsorship of Interworld Travels. The tournament started on 14th July and lasted for five days at the DHA stadium, Lahore. Teams from all over Punjab took part namely DHA Basketball Junior, DHA Basketball Senior, Fast University Lahore, Beacon House University, Government College University, Iqbal Town Basketball Club, Don Bosco Basketball Club, Model Town Basketball Club, Defence Black Basketball Club, Frank Five Basketball Club, University of Central Punjab, Rawalpindi Panther Club, Gujranwala Cantt Club, Askari 10, Cathedral Basketball Club and Lahore School of Economics.

The final was played between DHA Basketball Senior and Punjab College of Commerce. The last day drew a large crowd, who had gathered to witness a nail-biting match, which ended in the victory for Punjab Group of Colleges with a solid lead of 16 points. The winner team was awarded a trophy from Interworld Travels and the best player was given a return ticket to Dubai. The awards were presented by Mr. Fauzi Khawaja, IT & Operations Head, Bank of Punjab & President, Pakistan Rugby Association. It was an ideal way to unwind from the hectic work routine.
