Falls Village Board approves land purchase

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The village of Menomonee Falls recently received an offer it couldnt refuse. The Village Board authorized Village Manager Mark Fitzgerald June 4 to proceed with the purchase of two separate properties in the Woodland Prime business park, which is located north of Good Hope Road. A 14.1 acre parcel is at the north end of Flint Drive while a 19.04 acre parcel is adjacent to Good Hope Road across from the Eaton Corp. development. Weve been able to negotiate a very steep discount for these parcels, Fitzgerald said. By controlling the ownership at such a time in the future when there is development potential, we then can negotiate directly with future developers rather than leaving it in the hands of someone else. According to Fitzgerald, the village is paying $24,526 per acre while the properties are assessed at $158,920 per acre. We are paying about one-sixth the assessed value, Fitzgerald said. Village President Randy Newman noted the business park is the vision of Richard Strong, the onetime leader of Strong Capital Management, which was later purchased by Wells Fargo. Entities linked with Strong had owned the vacant parcels at one point in time. This is still his vision to get that finished and I think part of the reason he deeply discounted with his group is to finish that vision, Newman said. Waiting for resolution Several representatives from contractors involved in the construction of the Radisson Hotel spoke for the third consecutive meeting. Contractors have complained they have not been

Scenes from the campaign

Walker draws support for local area, attention from national media
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR It is one thing to be part of a campaign caravan of media and political professionals following a candidate on a whirlwind campaign tour, it is another to be a local reporter at one of those campaign stops. In the days leading up to the June 5 decision day in Wisconsin government, Gov. Scott Walkers campaign itinerary included stops in Sussex and Germantown. During his stop at Quad/Graphics in Sussex on June 1, Walker was accompanied by South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley as well as Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch. "All eyes are on Wisconsin," Haley said about the recall. Haley cited the steps she, Walker and other governors have taken to keep promises and "be judged not for what we say, but what we do." "The reason this governor from South Carolina cares is because (Walker) had the courage to go through the (changes) , he had the courage to take it on even when it got ugly, and he never stopped, he never stopped. When the heat lifted, he lifted right with it," Haley said. Walker and all other officials wore safety glasses during the appearance. Walker who previously toured a Quad/Graphics plant in Lomira was presented with a blue Quad/Graphics shirt just prior to speaking. "This shirt I'll be proud to wear Wednesday morning (June 6) and still be Gov. Scott Walker of the great state of Wisconsin," Walker said. Walker and other officials spoke on a stage that was no more than five feet off the floor, with employees in front of them and on stairs behind them. The media entourage included television stations from other parts of the state, National Public Radio and Christian Schneider, who has been blogging on Wisconsin politics for National Review Online over the past year. After the speeches, Walker, Haley and Kleefisch were given a tour of Quad/Graphics. At one point, the television cameras took charge and surrounded Walker for a few questions, before the entourage left. Two days later with several stops across the state in between Walker was in Washington County, visiting his call center on Rivercrest Drive in Germantown. This time, Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus accompanied Walker and Kleefisch. Priebus, who was the Wisconsin Republican Party chairman prior to being elected to the national party post, said the election "is about taking care of home." "It is going to start right here," Priebus said. Priebus said the volunteers "are going to pave the way and create a path of light by making sure that Rebecca and Scott Walker stay right where they're at, in Madison, leading the state." Walker for his part thanked supporters for the prayers for his family. While the rock star tag line was used derisively against Walker during the campaign, he was a rock star to this audience. Walker and Kleefisch signed several autographs, and even Priebus signed autographs and posed for photos. The scene was recorded by local television stations as well as reporters for Family Radio, Buzzfeed and the Philadelphia Daily News. Brian Sikma from Media Trackers also was on the scene at this campaign stop. This wasnt a national election, but there certainly was an interest in this campaign that went well beyond the state borders. At mid-afternoon on election day, the Wisconsin recall was the second item from the top on the BBC Web site the first was

Girls soccer: Local teams conclude seasons

The season came to an end for the two local teams in girls soccer sectional semifinals June 7. Menomonee Falls lost to Grafton 21. Menomonee Falls was trailing 1-0 in the closing minutes of the game when Jami Lessila scored the equalizer at the 78th minute. However, Grafton scored in the second overtime as Emma Fatia converted an assist by Carly Pfannerstill. Menomonee Falls advanced to the sectional semi-final by upsetting Arrowhead 1-0 June 2, with Anna Smalley scoring off an assist by Jenna Woodson in the first overtime. Menomonee Falls ended the season with a 17-6-2 record. In Division 3, defending champion Kettle Moraine Lutheran lost at Brookfield Academy, 1-0. Kettle Moraine Lutheran ended the season with a 12-7-2 record. Germantown's season came to an end at Cedarburg June 2, as the Warhawks lost to Whitefish Bay 2-1. Whitefish Bay had a 1-0 lead at halftime off a goal by Gilly Maxwell but Germantown scored the equalizer in the opening minutes of the second half, as Paige Blankenheim converted an assist from Maddie Tetzke. The game was then delayed due to a report of thunder in the area. A Leah Rothstein goal at the 86th minute sent the Blue Dukes into the sectional round. Germantown ended the season with a 15-5-1 record.

Templeton student second in national history bee

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR As relative newcomer to the world of history competition, Dominic Pino learned fast. Pino, a seventh grade student at Templeton Middle School, finished second in the National History Bee. While the event was held May 12, it was broadcast on the History Channel June 1. As part of the agreement for participating, Pino had to agree to not state the results prior to the television broadcast. During the June 5 Hamilton School Board meeting, Principal Patty Polczynski explained that information about the contest was sent to the school last fall. She talked with teachers Rhonda Watton and Alan Schneider, and they expressed an interest in participating in the event. Pino was school champion in the first history bee at Templeton, advancing to the state competition in Marshall in March. Pino won the state competition which included five other competitors to qualify for the national competition in Washington D.C. Polczynski said that while the family couldnt release the exact results, they were able to say Pino was in the top 16. As Pino advanced in competition, he said he stayed in school during lunch two to three times a week to study for the competition with assistance from Schneider. In addition, Pinos younger sister earned the master quizzer title by helping Dominic prepare the competition. She asked me tons of history questions for me to answer, Pino said. The range of history was broad from ancient Egypt to last year, he noted. Pinos approach to competition was incremental, from state to the national competition. When Pino went to the state competition, he said he built his confidence as he answered each question during throughout the competition. At the national competition, Pino had one initial goal. My goal was to get on TV, he said, explaining there was a preliminary round that was not televised in which all competitors had to correctly answer 25 questions. Pino added that the questions in the national preliminary round were harder than the ones posed during the televised portion of the competition. As the competition continued, Pino said the next goal was to get one question right during the television portion of the competition. During the School Board meeting, Pino added he had another goal following the competition. Id like to go back there, he said. Pinos mother, Lisa, noted that during the national competition they learned that other competitors were part of a quiz bowl circuit of history competition. A lot of middle schools have quiz bowl teams that travel and compete, which we learned from getting to know the other contestants. For him to be kind of the rookie, he did a good job, Lisa Pino added. In addition to his recent honor, Pino is vice president of the Templeton Student Council.

point when were going to get an answer of money that contractors are owed. The work has been completed at the hotel, our work has been approved and signed off and yet we still sit here a year after the opening of this hotel with nearly 10 percent of the money held back from us not being paid, Bloom said. The board met in closed session on the matter prior to the regular Village Board meeting. After the regular Village Board meeting Fitzgerald indicated an answer would come soon but not in the next several days. Contracts approved The board approved a contract with Payne & Dolan for the village 2012 asphalt paving program. Payne & Dolan submitted

the low bid of $3,77,246.89. The motion included language that the village will reimburse the expenditure with proceeds from a future borrowing. According to information from village staff, the 2012 asphalt program will include the complete reconstruction of the Old Falls Village parking lot and the asphalt walking path through Lime Kiln Park, rebuilding Woodside Lane and Victory Road, installing storm sewer and St. Martin Drive and Shore Crest Drive and the removal and repair of "various streets in tin the village. The board selected Stark Asphalt for this year's curb and gutter program. Stark submitted a base bid of $253,672.50. The project involves the replacement and repair of defective curb and gutter in various portions of the village. The motion included language that the village will reimburse the expenditure with proceeds from a future borrowing.

...Recall campaign
From page 4
stories from Diamond Jubilee Celebrations for Queen Elizabeth. It was the comment that went viral on the Internet on election night. This is the end of democracy, an antiWalker activist said on CNN. This is the end of democracy, we just got outspent. It wasnt the end of democracy in these parts of Washington or Waukesha counties, it was a vote that was more than a year in the making. The past 16 months comes down to this: While the February 2011 protests in the Capitol made for great television and while the Solidarity Singers became a unique tourist stop for anyone visiting Madison, the message did not resonate in Richfield, nor in hundreds of other communities across Wisconsin. In many ways, the classic quote from legendary House Speaker Tip ONeill all politics is local went out the window over the past year, as much of what was going on in Madison drew a response in places such as Germantown and Menomonee Falls. After Walker proposed his budget bill, it is worth noting that the big local protest against the legislation that occurred Feb. 16 in Menomonee Falls came AFTER school hours and there was no disruption to the school day in the Menomonee Falls, Germantown or Hamilton districts. That was in contrast to teachers in Madison, Milwaukee and other districts who protested during the day, forcing the cancellation of school for several days. It was the images from Madison that were remembered by voters last week. For anyone keeping track of local government over the past year, there were less-thansubtle signs of the level of support for Walker and the changes he sought, and the anger toward the coming recall and attempts to derail the governors plans. When the Menomonee Falls School Board approved a contract with its teachers union on May 23,2011, it faced strong criticism from residents who questioned why the board approved a contract without waiting for the changes in the Act 10 legislation to take effect. The Menomonee Falls School Board, though, was caught between two very different eras in government employee relations. The contract negotiations started the previous fall under the traditional collective bargaining requirements, and the changes that were negotiated were more than any that had occurred over the past several decades, as several former board members confirmed. But as Act 10 was proposed and was under a court challenge at the time the Falls School Board approved the contract many of those previously unheard of changes became standard options for local units of government. In the August 2011 recall election against Sen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) and Rep. Sandy Pasch (D-Shorewood), the election turned once votes came in from Waukesha and Washington counties, as Darling who was one of five Republican Senators targeted for recall by Democrats took 66 percent of the votes in Waukesha County and 73 percent in Washington County. When petitions were turned in to force a recall election against Walker and Kleefisch earlier this year, who signed the petition was turned into a de facto referendum on Walker and Kleefisch in the April local elections. Two candidates for the Germantown School Board who signed the Walker recall lost, as did Hamilton School Board incumbent Lynn Kristensen, who was voted out of office when her signing of the recall petition became a last-minute issue in what is a low-key race in other election years. All of those races over the past year were the undercard to what became the main event early last week. In this part of Wisconsin, this is what democracy looked like.
