    Minority enrollment at the University of Maryland increased 8.7% this fall according to self-reported student data, with increases of 5.1% for African American students, 22.5% for American Indian students, 7.8% for Asian students, and 6.2% for Hispanic students.     UM Announces Increase in Minority Enrollment


    COLLEGE PARK According to self-reported student data minority enrollment at the university has increased a total of 8.7 percent this fall. University President Wallace Loh is pleased with the schools progress in diversity. The university has taken a significant step forward, said Loh.

    The following chart shows the increase of students for each race category this fall: Race African American American Indian Asian Hispanic Increased by 5.1% 22.5% 7.8% 6.2%

    Statistics show five years ago minority enrollment was 1,540 students, it is now 1,899. The increase in minority students is a gratifying sight for many students, faculty, and administrators who have worked for it, said Chancellor William E. Kirwan. We still have more to do. This is only the beginning.
