Early life

Obamas mother Kansas, her father worked on oil rigs during Depression. Enlisted in the service. Her mother went to work on a bomber assembly line. After the war and several moves, the couple landed in Hawaii.

Obamas father was born in Kenya. The elder Obama Sr. grew up herding goats in Africa, eventually earing a scholarship that allowed him to leave Kenya and go to a collegue of Hawaii.

While studying at the University of Hawaii, Obama Sr. met Ann Dunham. They married on February 2, 1961. Barack was born six months later.

Obamas parents separeted when he was two years old. And then he return to Kenya. In 1966 Dunham married Lolo Soetoro. A year later, the family moved to Indonesia where Obamas half sister Maya was born.

Several incidents left Dunham worried about the safety and education of Barack, so he was sent with his maternal grandparents at the age of 10 years old. His mother and sister later joined them.

Excelling in school

He was excelling in basketball and graduated with academic honors in 1979. As one of the only three black students at the school, Obama became concious about racism.

Law Career

After High School Obama studied at Columbia University in New York, graduating in 1983 with a degree in political sciencie. After working in the business sector for two years, Obama moved to Chicago in 1985. Obama entered Harvard Law School in 1988. The next year he met Michelle Robinson. After law school, Obama returned to practice as a civil rights lawyer.

On October 3, 1992, he and Michelle were married. They moved to Kenwood and welcomed two daughters: Malia (born 1988) and Sasha (born 2001).

Obamas advocacy led him to run for the Illinois State Senate as a Democrat. He won election in 1996. Obama created a campaign committee in 2002. In february 2007, Obama made headlines when he announced his candidacy for 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

On November 4th, 2008, Barack Obama defeat Republican presidential nominee John McCain for the position of U.S. President, with 52.9 percent to 45.7 percent. On January 20, 2009, Obama became the 44th president of the United States and the first AfricanAmerican to hold this office.
