The World of Biology

Biology and You

Biology is the study of life What biologists study about living things
How they work How they interact with each other and their environment How they change over time

Biology and Society

Why study biology?
It helps people make informed decisions It helps to actively solve real-world problems.

Ethics moral principles and values Who is responsible for the use of scientific knowledge?

Characteristics of Living Things

Organization and Cells Response to Stimuli Homeostasis Metabolism Growth and Development Reproduction Change Through Time

Living Things Are Organized

made of one or more cells
Unicellular, Multicellular

each cell contains the genetic material that controls life functions Cell Tissue Organ Organ System Organism

Living Things Respond to Stimuli

Stimulus physical or chemical change in the internal or external environment Must do this to stay alive

Living Things Have Homeostasis

Maintaining and regulating stable internal conditions so it can better survive Temperature, water content, cells nutrient intake

Living Things Have Metabolism

Metabolism - All the chemical reactions that transform materials into energy Energy - The ability to do work.
Living things maintain their characteristics by using energy.

Begin as a single cell Growth - increase in amount of living material.

Forming new cells from an existing cell is cell division

Living Things Grow and Develop

Development - changes that take place during lifetime

Organism become mature

Living Things Produce Offspring

Reproduction Essential for the continuation of an organism's species.

Living Things Change Through Time

Adaptation - A structural, behavioral, or internal process that enables it to better survive in an environment. Evolution - accumulation of adaptations overtime.
