The mural America Tropical by Siqueiros, Olvera Street, Los Angeles

Since 1988 the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) has partnered with the City of Los Angeles on a project to conserve Amrica Tropical by David Alfaro Siqueiros, one of the great Mexican muralists of the twentieth century. The mural was created in 1932 on the second story of the Italian Hall, a brick building in downtown Los Angeles. Due to the controversial content of the mural, it was partially whitewashed within a few months of its completion and within a decade, it was completely painted over. For over twenty years, the GCI and the City of Los Angeles have worked together to preserve, protect, and present the mural to the public through numerous activities, including scientific study of the paint materials digital documentation of the mural's condition, and conservation treatment. The collaborative project also includes the construction of a protective shelter, a mural viewing platform, and an interpretive center. The interpretive center will present information about the artist and mural and will provide historic and artistic context for the work.
