How to prevent an electrical fire

1. Never overload an electrical receptacle with extension cords or three-way adapters. 2. Never run electrical cords under carpets or rugs, over nails, in traffic areas, or where there is chance of wear. 3. Dont misuse extension cords. 4. When purchasing any electrical device, choose only one that carries the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) or Factory Mutual (FM) rating. 5. Dont pull on an electrical cord to unplug it. Grasp the plug firmly and pull out straight so you dont bend the prongs.

What causes an electrical fire?

Electrical fires are usually caused a defect in an electrical system that causes a part to get very hot, igniting nearby combustible material. A typical defect is a loose connection of a wire onto a terminal, which causes overheating and/or sparks.

6. Replace any cord or plug that is cracked or discolored or feels hot to the touch when in use. 7. Call an electrician if your lights flicker and your appliances run sluggishly. 8. Dont use a bulb with more wattage than a lamp.

Undersized and overloaded wiring is one of the main causes of household electrical fires. The next most common reason is cracked and crumbling rubber insulation on the conductors of old cables which should have been replaced twenty years ago.
