Acids and Bases

BATs
At the end of this unit students should be able to: 1. Use acid-base definitions to identify acids and bases when given their formulas and reactions. Use Arrhenius and Brnsted-Lowry definitions to classify substances as acids or bases. Describe the characteristic properties of acids and bases. Compare and contrast the dissociation and strength of acids and bases in solutions. 2. For any aqueous solution, explain the meaning of the value indicated by the pH scale in terms of the hydrogen ion concentration. Given the hydronium (H3O+) ion concentration in a solution, calculate the pH and vice versa. Explain the meaning of these values. From acid-base titration data, calculate the concentration of an unknown solution.

Important Vocabulary
Students are responsible for learning the following words: Acid Base pH pOH Arrhenius acid/base Strong acid Weak acid Bronsted-Lowry acid/base Strong base Weak base Conjugate acid Conjugate base Neutralization Acid-base indicator Titration End point

Important Equations
Students are responsible for learning the following equations and how to manipulate them: pH= -log [H3O+] pOH= -log [OH-] pOH= 14.0 - pH
