Paperless Efforts and Consolidation Payoff

Using less paper has many advantages and Albany County will benefit. All copiers in Albany County government offices are now capable of duplex printing which means printing on both sides instead of using two sheets of paper. We dont know exactly how much money well save by doing this, said Albany County Executive Daniel McCoy, but we know by setting the copiers to default automatically to printing on both sides of the paper, we will use less and save money. Were being green and economical. One savings we are able to calculate immediately is with our paper purchasing. Albany County spent nearly $89,000 in 2011. By reaching out to Capital Region BOCES, the county was able to join in a paper cooperative bid and will be saving over $4,400 on this one commodity alone. This is a great example of inter-municipal cooperation, said Capital Region BOCES District Superintendent Charles S. Dedrick. I would encourage more municipalities to follow Albany Countys lead and get involved with cooperative bidding. Working together like this is a substantive and easy way that we can all help save significant money for our taxpayers at a time when every penny counts. I believe the savings will be even greater, continued McCoy. With double-sided copying, we expect we will use less cartons of paper and that will increase what we save as well. Other members participating in the cooperative paper bid include the following school districts: Berne-Knox-Westerlo, Cobleskill, Menands, Middleburgh, Ravena, Schenectady County, Schoharie, Sharon Springs, South Colonie, Watervliet and Voorheesville. ###
