Mr.Smith,Senior Executive of a Global Outsourcing Company based in California,USA asking for business from Mr.Gupta, Training & Development Manager of an Indian based company.The conversation happens over telephone.

THE CULTURAL MISUNDERSTANDING


After the first conversation Gupta feels that he clearly communicated to Smith that the training would not get done in the time he requested. On the other hand, Smith feels that Gupta clearly communicated that he would meet the deadline. How can this be? Smith, however, is used to low-context communication, relying heavily on the precise meaning of the words exchanged. From her perspective, Gupta agrees to the timeline when he responds ok. Most Americans in Guptas position would understand that Smith is still expecting the training to be completed on time.

Both Smith and Gupta need to seek to understand the aspects of their communication styles which are impacted by culture. Smith needs to be careful not to judge Gupta as unreliable and Gupta needs to be careful not to judge Smiths response as rude and inconsiderate.
