Hemodynamic monitoring

Allow for calculation of hemodynamic indices and limited data storage

Measure hemodynamic parameters

Closely examine cardiovascular function Evaluate cardiac pump

Evaluate the patients physiologic response to stimuli

Continuously assess respiratory gases Continuously evaluate blood gases and electrolytes

Estimate cellular oxygenation

Continuously evaluate glucose levels

Store waveforms
Automatically transmit selected data to a

The purposes of hemodynamic monitoring are to:

(1) aid in the diagnosis of various disorders, (2) assist in guiding therapies to minimize

or correct dysfunction,

(3) evaluate the patients response to

therapy. For safe operation of hemodynamic monitoring devices, nurses must be familiar with the anatomy and physiology of the system being monitored.

INVASIVE HEMODYNAMIC MONITORING TECHNIQUES

Have traditionally involved use of pulmonary artery catheter, which was originally designed for measurement of pulmonary artery and wedge pressure

NONINVASIVE MONITORING SYSTEM

Includes pressure measurement using oscillometric techniques , oxygenation measurement using pulse oximetry technology and measurement of cardiac output via doppler
