Overeagerness to please ruins the effectiveness of more individuals judgment than does the lack of zeal. The individual who tries too hard to please usually succeeds only in creating problems where none existed before

General Phase
The general phase lays the foundation for value efforts. Project selection and forming the team for value engineering studies form part of this phase Team consists of 5 to 7 members depending on the size of project, and work to SIX Ground Rules

Rule 1
Success in team work depends more on good human relations Demands cooperation, assistance, melding into a dynamic and creative group of all the people who will be contributing to the study

Rule 2
It is important to preach, practice and demonstrate team spirit all through the study

Rule 3
Work on specifics, divided and allocated to each member

Rule 4
Identifying and overcoming road blocks

Rule 5
Curb your overenthusiasm to please and to force your personal opinions on others

Profess and practice better relations

Be a good listener Determine the other fellows incentives Put yourself in his position Discuss everything with an open mind Explain your objectives Base all decisions on facts Dont act as the infalliable judge Learn from the experience of others Work on a give-and-take basis Stress the greater rewards available through team work
