Why study this course

The BTEC First Diploma is designed to provide a specialist work-related qualification in ICT. It has been developed to provide the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to prepare students for employment in IT-related fields.

Coursework and examinations

You will be assessed 100% through coursework. Students must complete assignments for each of the units.

Where will the course take me?

Entry requirements

On successful completion of a BTEC First qualification, students may progress into employment or progress to study at level 3.

4 GCSEs A*-D or equivalent, such as OCR National Certificate L1 (Merit in a related area) GCSE English or Math A*-D or equivalent

You will learn to use a range of application packages, how and why organisations use computers, and an introduction to more technical aspects including Networking and Programming. The mandatory and optional units will include: Computer Systems website development mobile phone communications interactive media production Programming Database Software Networking Essentials There is also an opportunity to complete one of the following key skills: Functional Skills English Functional Skills Maths You will also have access to a choice of GCSEs including English and Maths.

Teaching Methods

This course is split evenly between theoretical and practical lessons. These lessons are all conducted in one of the 20 modern, networked computer labs, running a wide range of industry standard software. Demonstrations and handouts will support practical tasks for you to do in the class and through your own studies at home. We expect 100% attendance and punctuality from our students. If your attendance or punctuality falls below 80%, you will be subject to the Colleges disciplinary procedure

Desirable Interests

You may be planning a career in ICT which may include plans to continue studying ICT at university. You will be interested in using computer applications, but also be interested in acquiring technical skills such as networking and programming.
